Tips for Road Trips {Win}

The car is packed and you have all your Road Trip Must Have’s but now what the heck do you do to keep the sanity on the long journey?  Here are some simple tips to keeping the peace and not losing your mind on the road.

1.  Frequent stops – Map out some fun, unique or even wacky places to stop along the way.  Think outside the rest stop.  check out these Weird and Wonderful USA tourist attractions for some inspiration.

2.  Surprises – Reward them for good behavior or not arguing by pulling out fun games and treats or make them earn them with a Travel Scavenger Hunt or another fun travel game.

3.  Timing – Think about what time you are leaving and when you will get to certain destinations.  You don’t want to get stuck in rush hour traffic with a kids are hungry or have to pee.

4.   The Oh___! Bag – Have a small bag that is accessable for a a quick change of clothes, pants, diapers in case someone has an accident or spill.  You don not want to find a new outfit by taking apart the perfectly packed trunk, cause you know those kids clothes will be on the bottom.

5.  Essentials aka Electronics – Do not forget the DVD players, ipads, ipods, iphones, you know, all the digital babysitters we have all come to love.  However, do not be afraid to limit the use of these devices or take them away for bad behavior.

6.  The imaginary wall – This comes in handy when the kids start to get on your nerves.  My husband likes to pretend to put up a wall between the front and backseat and he will not put it down until they are getting along or guess the magic word.  This makes them laugh and distracts them from whatever they were fighting about.

7.  Pack a mean cooler –  Not only does this save money but it keeps snack and drinks very close by for immediate satisfaction.   A cooler comes in handy in the hotel room too so you won’t have to try to run out for chocolate milk at 6am.

  1. Teach your kids fun games like ‘ car bingo ‘ where they look out of the windows and try to spot all different color cars or spot licence plates that begin with all letters of the alphabet. For longer trips, you can also make a sticker chart and have them spot licence plates from all different states…all these games are great cause they take a long time to complete and entertain for many trips :)!

  2. I shared on FB through the widget with my username Mary Happymommy.

  3. tweet-http://twitter.com/#!/mami2jcn/status/105715820260360192

  4. Bring patience and favorite snacks, music and toys.

  5. Always keep first aid kit in your car for emergencies.

  6. Plan ahead as much as possible, especially for food. My family is full of food allergies so we need to make sure we have plenty to eat in case there is no place good to stop.

  7. The best thing one can do on a road trip is pack healthy snacks, stay hydrated, sing along to good music, and most importantly go with the flow.

  8. I like to involve the kids in preparing the ride entertainment. They work together to choose the movies. They are responsible for packing a back with toys, games, and other activities. Someone usually brings a Mad Libs book, and someone else brings a deck of Uno cards. They share books. One time one of the kids printed up license plate bingo off the internet. This works great for our family since our children are older.

  9. The alphabet game is a really good distraction, and bringing plenty of music is important for us too, we once had everyone’s ipods die in the middle of nowhere and were stuck listening to opera.

  10. Have plenty of snacks and activities available and plan in several get-up-and-move-around breaks!

  11. Id take toys they can play with on the way toys that dont make alot of noise and it helped keep them occupied some until we could stop. Watch out you may not want to take any really favorite toys. We did and we had to keep our eyes especially more not to lose the toys

  12. My tip is to take full advantage of those rest stops along the highway, even if you don’t think you have to go. This past summer I was taking a road trip and got stuck in traffic for 3 hours, without barely moving! Needless to say as soon as we started moving I had to stop to go to the restroom! 🙂

  13. With two little ones, I always make sure to have lots of snacks and drinks available as well as little toys for the boys to play with. We love road trips with the family! nlevdan3 at yahoo dot com

  14. Leave really early in the morning. when we go on a trip we leave in the middle of the night ~3-4am and we get really far before the kids wake up (and husband wakes up) 🙂

  15. bring plenty of games to keep them occupied!

  16. Get kids a new book/coloring book/activity book or digital equivalent so they’ll have something new to distract them during the drive!
