Thanksgiving Tablescapes & Decorating Tips

If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, you’re in luck! I’m here with some tips on where to shop and find great holiday decor. I love entertaining and decorating for the holidays, it lets me get creative and into the holiday spirit. Creating a beautiful Thanksgiving tablescape is easy and doesn’t have to cost a fortune, if you know where to shop. To help get you in the mood we have created four distinctive tablescape inspirations for you and we share some entertaining tips along the way!

Find inspiration for the theme

The first thing to do is choose a theme, you don’t have to go overboard but know the colors you want to use before you hit the stores. Otherwise you’ll throw everything that looks good in your cart. Inspiration can come from something simple like a set of dishes or a little gold pumpkin. Whatever it is choose one thing that inspires all the rest. Check out our fall Pinterest board to get some great ideas.

Make a list

Make a list of what you need. If you do not have a list, then you will come home with too many things and not enough table space. Less is more on the main table, since you’ll want room for all the side dishes and for the turkey. I’ve said it before, always take inventory of what you have first.

Hostess Tip:

Set up a smaller table next to the dining table for extra sides, napkins, a pitcher of water. Don’t forget to make this table just as pretty as the main table. You can also have an older child help serve, by passing things from this table to the guests.  Kids love to help.

TJ Maxx HomeGoods

This is always my first stop when planning any party or get together and many times I find my source of inspiration here. This is the best place to pick up tablecloths, napkins, dishes, wine glasses and serving platters. They always have the basics for entertaining as well as great seasonal decor. The furniture and home accessories here can be really great, so if you need a few things to help finish a room before guests arrive go here.

Pier One Imports

Head here for larger items you may need like extra seating, new cushions, outdoor furniture, rugs and candles. For the table they have great napkin rings and placemats. If you are trying to spruce up your home before the holidays with a few small accent pieces like vases, lamps and mirrors check here for sales.

Cost Plus World Market

Head here for unique treasures and holiday decorations.  Pick up chargers, serving utensils and bowls. They also have plenty of baskets and useful accessories for decorating the table. They also have everything you need to make gift baskets — and check out their wine selection and vintage candy and snacks.

Head Outside

Get outside and collect your decorations, they’re free! Now is the perfect time to collect leaves, acorns, pinecones and other twigs and branches that have fallen to the ground. Create your own DIY centerpiece and decorations, go on a nature hike and get the kids to help! Fruit and vegetables can also be great decorations. A simple bowl of apples and other seasonal fruit makes for some great props for a display.

Hostess Tip

Use craft paper for the kids’ table and leave it blank. When the kids arrive give them bags to head outside and collect their own leaves, rocks, twigs and pinecones and let them decorate their own table. Set out crayons, glue and other craft accessories for them to use as well.  If you are feeling very crafty, have them each make this Apple Craft Bag for their adventure.
