savvy sassy moms logo

I’ll never forget how excited I was to pick out all the items for my diaper bag the first time. I would be prepared for every occasion, every change of weather, every diaper blowout and beyond. I had creams, bibs, swaddles, hats — everything a new, first time mom thinks she needs in her bag. What I wasn’t prepared for was just how heavy that bag would get!

While on some occasions those extra items did come in handy, it was few and far between and I found myself carrying around a lot of extra weight. I never quite pictured myself as a mom that would carry a traditional diaper bag, but I also couldn’t bring myself to invest in a luxury handbag that would eventually be home to dirty diapers and crumbled goldfish. Then came my Newlie diaper bag…

All about Newlie

Newlie was created by Leslie Newton, the founder and other half of timi and leslie, a well known diaper bag company. After moving on from timi & leslie, she founded Newlie, a diaper bag that doesn’t compromise style. My first thoughts when I opened this bag was this mom knows what she’s doing!

I am guilty of loving purses — and, admittedly, expensive ones — which is one of the things I immediately loved about the Lily Tote… it looks expensive, but doesn’t cost a small fortune. Coming in at just under $100, it’s practical in every sense of the word.

Try the new Newlie Diaper Bag: Under $100!

What I love about Newlie

Here are a handful of the things that I love most about this new diaper bag:
— Durable outside material that can be wiped down with warm water
— Two outer pockets and two inner pockets
— Two side pockets perfect for bottles or a sunglasses case
— Large insulated pocket, great for storing milk that you’ve pumped at work to carry home
— Antique brass hardware makes it trendy, but timeless
— Larger changing pad than what comes with most diaper bags
— Long strap included to convert it to a cross body bag

New to Newlie : Diaper Bag Essentials

What’s in my Newlie diaper bag

Here’s what I packed in my Newlie diaper bag:

Honest Diapers + Wipes: A favorite in our household. Who doesn’t love the adorable prints?

Lollacup: The best cup for anti-leakage we have found thus far. Nobody likes a leaky cup in their diaper bag. (Nordstrom, $18)

Disposable placemats: Because restaurant tables can be questionable. Enough said. (Amazon, $10)

aden + anais Swaddle Blankets:  We are out of the swaddle stage, but these have such an array of uses and they’re a diaper bag must-have. (Nordstrom, $44 for a set of four)

Ella’s Kitchen Organic Food Pouches: There is not a flavor of these my daughter won’t eat. Lately it’s the only way I can get her to eat her veggies!

An extra Mam Pacifier: We have been MAM fans since day one. (Amazon, $6 for a set of 2)

Skip Hop Tuck Away Bib: These are so convenient because they tuck into a very small pocket for easy diaper bag storage. (Nordstrom, $8)

Don’t forget: An extra set of clothes, a pair of pajamas and a small zippered pouch with items like sunscreen, hand sanitizer, band-aids and a spare set of contacts (for me!).

Spring is the perfect time to add new life to your closet and these 10 fantastic staple pieces will let you go ahead and start transitioning your wardrobe from spring to summer. From denim dresses to pendent necklaces, each of these items will be a stylish choice for your everyday life.

10 Closet staples for spring
1. Stripes

The shirt shown is by J.Crew for Net-A-Porter, but also look at places like Target or Forever 21 for striped t-shirts, sweaters and even tanks.

2. Midi skirt

If you have not tried the midi trend yet, you’ll be amazed by how long they make your legs look! Yes, it’s true. The midi I chose for this post is a super steal at just over $14 and I love it. I can see it with a blouse or a t-shirt, heels or flats… the possibilities are endless.

3. Trench

I love a classic long trench coat, but I fell in love with this short swing trench from J.Crew as a fresh new spin for spring. It is made of poplin and is just so versatile. This jacket would be a terrific addition to any closet.

4. Denim dress

Denim dresses are everywhere this season! This dress from Zara stood out to me, mostly because of the v-neck — which is flattering on most everyone — and the beautiful embellishment on the front. I’ve also seen great choices at Gap, Old Navy, Forever 21, and Target, so be sure to shop around.

5. Gladiator sandal

Gladiator sandals are still in style. My favorite pick is the Lowell flat by Tory Burch, but if you’re looking for a steal try one of these: Mossimo Wendi, Barbados Thong by Mia, or the Selma by Circus for Sam Edelman.

6. Lace

Lace, in general, is very feminine and beautiful, making it a great choice for spring. How can you not feel gorgeous wearing it? Try adding lace to your closet with a blouse like this one from J.Crew or a pullover from Anthropologie for a more casual look.

7. Perforated flats

Menswear is still a hot item on lists of trends, including for this spring. I am not a huge fan of loafers, because I was a child of the the ’90s when Eastland penny loafers were “the thing” to wear. But, I have completely jumped on board with the slip-on sneaker and perforated flat version of this trend. They are a nice change from ballet flats, still giving us a closed toe without having to wear socks. It’s a win-win! Many stores and designers have shoes in this style out right now and at every price point, from Payless to Neiman Marcus.

8. White jeans

White jeans, I love you with all of my heart. I love you in the spring with a dark sweater and into fall with riding boots. They are a clean, classic look. Your closet wants white jeans! Try a straight, slim fit like these.

9. Pendant necklace

From shiny gold to wooden beads, you can wear pendant necklaces with just about anything! And, you can find them everywhere right now — Instagram flash sales, Etsy, local boutiques, and most major retailers. Find one you love and I guarantee you will find yourself wearing it daily.

10. Chic carryall

Over-sized carryalls give you functionality and style in one. Whether heading to the office, park, or out to dinner, you can keep everything you might need on hand without compromising a chic look.

Whether you add one or all then of these staples to your closet this spring, take the time to find a style that fits you and wear it with confidence.

Which spring closet staples caught your eye?

One of the must have treats of the Fall season is a pumpkin spice latte and like most things, the actual color of a pumpkin spice latte inspires me. It’s time to break out the boots and leather jackets!  Nothing puts you in the mood for falling leaves and chilly days more than a warm pumpkin spice latte.  We even have a homemade pumpkin spice coffee creamer recipe that you can make at home!  There are a few fashion favorites that also put us in the mood for fall.
How to style a leather jacket

5 Fall Fashion Favorites

1.  Leather tote bag — Leather is a huge trend this fall and so is the color camel and so this leather bag is perfect for Fall. This is large enough to fit just about anything you would need for a a day running errands or heading to work meetings.

2.  Cable-knit sweaters — Nothing says fall more than a cozy cable-knit sweater. The great thing about a soft neutral like this one is that it will take you from fall all the way through winter paired with everything from skinny jeans to skirts.

3.  Knee-high boots — We all love our boots, but take it up a notch this season and invest in a knee-high pair. Great for pairing with leggings, skinny jeans or skirts, these are the boots you will wear all the time. This yummy color will go with everything in your closet.

4.  Leather jacket — We can’t think fall without thinking leather! A good leather jacket is always on trend, and you will be surprised at how quickly it becomes a favorite basic. Spend a bit more to get a quality investment piece, or go faux leather to get the look for less.

5. Spiced nails — Try a little shimmer of light gold, bronze or a shiny nude on your nails this fall. They will go perfect when you wrap your finger around that Venti, non-fat, light whip pumpkin spice latte.

Guest post by Jessica MeffordStyle-Meet-Life-SavvySassy2

Today I had a friend and her baby over for a play date. I love hosting playdates, but getting dressed in the morning before one can be a real challenge. I’m usually running around getting my son dressed and trying to make sure our place is (somewhat) picked up. When I don’t have a lot of time to get dressed (which is most of the time), I find it easiest to build my outfit around a comfortable and versatile staple that I know I will feel good wearing – like a favorite pair of jeans or top.

Chambray Shirt

My reliable go-to is a chambray button-down and that’s where I started today. From there, I choose one accessory or article of clothing that makes the outfit interesting and fun. I look to statement accessories, fun patterns, vibrant colors and unique layering garments to spice up my go-to staple.

Carmel Leather Jacket

Today I spiced up my staple button-down with fun patterned corduroy pants. It instantly elevated the overall look because of its warm colors and repeating print. Next, I wanted to make sure my outfit would be flexible. I spend most of the playdate chasing around my toddler inside and outside our loft, so I’m constantly taking off and putting on layers. As we played on our rooftop deck (which is like our backyard in the city – minus the yard), I wore this leather jacket that I recently discovered at Target. It is so much more fun to throw on a (reasonably priced!) caramel leather jacket than just throwing on a sweatshirt.

After putting on my button-down, pants and leather jacket, I was pretty much out of time. My son was ready for me to return my attention to him. Layering long silver and gold necklaces is another quick trick that I use to pull together a look in record speed. It requires no matching and no thinking. I just throw them on along with whatever pair of silver or gold posts that I can find at the time.

Stylish Outfit Building 101

To review, here’s my recipe for how to quickly assemble an outfit that is practical and beautiful even for a casual playdate. 1. Start with a comfortable and versatile staple. 2. Next, choose 1 thing to make the outfit more “interesting” using pattern, color, bold accessories or layering. 3. Then, pause and make sure the outfit is flexible and consider grabbing an extra layer. 4. Lastly, throw on a mix of silver and gold accessories.

Style-Meet-Life-BIO1Jessica Mefford’s “Style, Meet Life”  After becoming a mom, I learned that it is difficult to find the time to get myself dressed each day. I also learned that it is actually really important for my mental and emotional well-being to get dressed. I noticed that when I looked more put together, I felt more put together. And, when I felt more put together, I was better able to help those around me at home and at work because I felt more confident. After talking with other moms and realizing they related to my getting dressed dilemma, I knew I wanted to make it easier for women to merge their personal style with the demands and time constraints of everyday life. I wanted to find ways to reintroduce our style to our life. Style Meet Life, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest.

Trendspotting:  Field Jackets

Fall trendspotting is one of my favorite things to do. I recently wrote about the 10 hottest fall colors and on that list was the up and coming color: lichen green. There are many shades of lichen green and all are very similar to the green shade you see on military fatigues and camo prints. So, it’s no surprise that lichen green is popular with both denim and jackets this fall.  Field jackets, camp jackets or military jackets, what ever you want to call them, I suggest you get one.

I like field jackets because they are not as structured or formal as trench coats are.  These jackets are perfect for staying warm as the weather gets cooler and for all you Moms sitting on the sidelines at soccer games. They make a great travel coat as well.  However, take note that this trend does come with a few warnings, because you don’t want look like you are heading off to war or on some wild safari in a jungle somewhere. I was in New York City a few weeks ago and I picked up this jacket from Mango and I have to say, I am in love with it.  When going out for dinner in Brooklyn I paired it with my dark skinny jeans, a bright orange shirt, Steve Madden boots and my Stella & Dot tech wallet.

Style tips when wearing a field jacket

1.  Wear a bright color or a crisp white shirt underneath the jacket , this contrast is necessary so you do not camouflage yourself into the background.

2.  Wear boots with heels, this will help dress things up a bit.  Do not pair this with flat military style boots, you will look like you are ready for combat.

3.  Accessorize with a large statement necklace or other fun accessories so you don’t look too serious or frumpy.

4.  Find a filed jacket that is fitted at the waist or has the capability to be cinched at the waist.  This will make it look more femine and not like a tent.

What do you think about Field Jackets?
