Save or Splurge on the Best Exfoliators

You are a grown woman, which means an exfoliator needs to be part of your beauty regime. Your face cannot afford to be without one! Your skin cells are always regenerating, about every 28-31 days if you’re younger and a little bit longer if you’re, ahem, a bit more mature. Without help to slough off and remove these dead skin cells, they can lead to clogged pores and dull skin — and prevent your skincare products from being effective.

Whether you are dealing with adult acne or fine lines, sunspots or dull skin, all of the skincare products you use — serums, lotions, foundations and more — will work better when you have exfoliated skin. Here are three options I’m loving at every price range.Best Exfoliator to Splurge on: Lancer Polish

Splurge: The luxury face exfoliator

I recently tried The Lancer Method three-part system, which includes an exfoliator, gentle cleanser and moisturizer. My favorite is the exfoliator, by far. The system has you exfoliate before you cleanse, an interesting switch of steps but one that is designed to better prepare your skin for cleansing.

The exfoliating Polish is pretty gritty, which I love. It combines a self-warming element to make the exfoliation more effective, along with pure minerals and pumpkin and pomegranate enzymes to remove surface debris and dull, dry skin cells. Plus, it has lavender in it, which makes it divine to use before bed. It is not cheap, but with fans like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian looking to get that “Lancer glow,” it might be a worthwhile skin treat. (Psst! If you’re on the fence, buy it through Sephora so you can return it if it’s not a great fit for your skin.)

Boot Botanics

Save: The drugstore face exfoliator

Despite my love of Lancer, you don’t have to spend a bundle to to keep your skin exfoliated. Head to your nearest Target beauty section or Ulta store to pick up one of my drugstore faves: the Boots Botanics Microdermabrasion Polish Age Defense. For $13, you get a powerful polish made of superfine pumice particles that can be used once a week to buff off those dead skin cells. The polish also combines the antioxidant power of ginkgo extract and the soothing moisture of shea butter to leave your skin looking fresh and smooth. This scrub is also pretty gritty, so if you have sensitive skin, you might want to pass.

Baking soda exfoliator

DIY: Make your own face exfoliator

Want an even simpler and more affordable exfoliator that will still slough off that dead surface skin? Head to the kitchen and grab your baking soda. Mix a teaspoon or so with some water or your favorite creamy cleanser to make a paste and massage onto your skin. The baking soda is super fine so it won’t irritate your skin, and since you can mix it with water or a cleanser, and adjust the amount you add, it’s easy to customize the formula to fit your skin.

No more excuses! Pick your perfect exfoliator and get to sloughing!

The fall season is upon and us and boots are once again in the spotlight as we return to wearing our jeans, leggings and perhaps a maxi skirt here and there. This year there are three boot styles for fall that are catching the most attention — ankle boots,/booties, knee-high boots and lace-up boots. I had a blast searching for the most happenin’ ones for this season and there really are SO many styles to choose from!

One way to narrow it down is to think about what you like as “extras” on your boots. This fall many of the styles come with either buckles, straps, cut-outs or laces (and occasionally more than one of those!). Lace-up boots are definitely back in! The heel that is making the most noise (get it, making the most noise?) is the chunky, stacked heel. And no matter which texture you like, there is something for everyone as well — suede, textured leather, smooth or weathered.
boot styles for fall

1. Madewell, The Perrie Boot – $228
2. Madden Girl Mistley Stone Lace Up Boot – $70 (side note: these boots do NOT have to be laced every time since there is a zipper in the back. How awesome is that?)
3. Crown Vintage Wendy Bootie – $80
4. Steve Madden P Kamby Boot – $100
5. Anthropologie Latigo Peace Boot- $160
6. Fergalicious bootie – $47
7. Target Mossimo Jessica Suede Strappy Boot – $50
8. Payless Tanner Lace-Up Boot- $40
9. Crown Vintage Louvina Boot – $140

Here I am wearing my new pair of Jessica Simpson ankle boots. I just love the color, the buckles and the price was great too ($60 at T.J. Maxx)

One of the must have treats of the Fall season is a pumpkin spice latte and like most things, the actual color of a pumpkin spice latte inspires me. It’s time to break out the boots and leather jackets!  Nothing puts you in the mood for falling leaves and chilly days more than a warm pumpkin spice latte.  We even have a homemade pumpkin spice coffee creamer recipe that you can make at home!  There are a few fashion favorites that also put us in the mood for fall.
How to style a leather jacket

5 Fall Fashion Favorites

1.  Leather tote bag — Leather is a huge trend this fall and so is the color camel and so this leather bag is perfect for Fall. This is large enough to fit just about anything you would need for a a day running errands or heading to work meetings.

2.  Cable-knit sweaters — Nothing says fall more than a cozy cable-knit sweater. The great thing about a soft neutral like this one is that it will take you from fall all the way through winter paired with everything from skinny jeans to skirts.

3.  Knee-high boots — We all love our boots, but take it up a notch this season and invest in a knee-high pair. Great for pairing with leggings, skinny jeans or skirts, these are the boots you will wear all the time. This yummy color will go with everything in your closet.

4.  Leather jacket — We can’t think fall without thinking leather! A good leather jacket is always on trend, and you will be surprised at how quickly it becomes a favorite basic. Spend a bit more to get a quality investment piece, or go faux leather to get the look for less.

5. Spiced nails — Try a little shimmer of light gold, bronze or a shiny nude on your nails this fall. They will go perfect when you wrap your finger around that Venti, non-fat, light whip pumpkin spice latte.

Now that fall is officially here, we can all enjoy our pumpkin spice lattes and wear the season’s footwear of choice…boots. Yes, boots! I, for one, believe that no one can have too many pairs of boots. There are so many different styles, heights, and colors, and they can go from really dressy to super casual. This fall season there are three types of boots to keep in your wardrobe: riding boots, ankle booties and dressy boots. However, buying three new pairs of boots at one time, can either set you back a few hundred dollars or if you’re budget-savvy, all three pairs can cost you less than $140.

Here’s a look at the must-have boot styles and how to get the most bang-for-your-buck when it comes to your boots this fall. Happy shopping!

Trendspotting:  Field Jackets

Fall trendspotting is one of my favorite things to do. I recently wrote about the 10 hottest fall colors and on that list was the up and coming color: lichen green. There are many shades of lichen green and all are very similar to the green shade you see on military fatigues and camo prints. So, it’s no surprise that lichen green is popular with both denim and jackets this fall.  Field jackets, camp jackets or military jackets, what ever you want to call them, I suggest you get one.

I like field jackets because they are not as structured or formal as trench coats are.  These jackets are perfect for staying warm as the weather gets cooler and for all you Moms sitting on the sidelines at soccer games. They make a great travel coat as well.  However, take note that this trend does come with a few warnings, because you don’t want look like you are heading off to war or on some wild safari in a jungle somewhere. I was in New York City a few weeks ago and I picked up this jacket from Mango and I have to say, I am in love with it.  When going out for dinner in Brooklyn I paired it with my dark skinny jeans, a bright orange shirt, Steve Madden boots and my Stella & Dot tech wallet.

Style tips when wearing a field jacket

1.  Wear a bright color or a crisp white shirt underneath the jacket , this contrast is necessary so you do not camouflage yourself into the background.

2.  Wear boots with heels, this will help dress things up a bit.  Do not pair this with flat military style boots, you will look like you are ready for combat.

3.  Accessorize with a large statement necklace or other fun accessories so you don’t look too serious or frumpy.

4.  Find a filed jacket that is fitted at the waist or has the capability to be cinched at the waist.  This will make it look more femine and not like a tent.

How to Dress Up a Plain White Tank

Every girl need to have at least four white tanks in their closet, they are not only inexpensive but one of the easiest pieces of clothing to work with since you can literally add any accessory or layered look to work for you. A white tank doesn’t need to be reserved just for the gym or house cleaning so I’ve come up with a few ways to give boring a little wow factor.
  1. Hi-Lo skirts are still going to be on trend for 2013, in fact a little more popular than last year. This Bqueen asymmetrical hi-lo skirt is the perfect addition to a white tank. Add a great statement necklace in the same color palette and you’ll have one fabulous outfit. Top it off with a denim jacket.
  2. Throw on a pair of weathered skinny jeans with some super cute booties like these Franscesco Milano ankle boots and some big statement earrings. Complete the look with a gray faux suede jacket.
  3. Black and white is one of the color trends for 2013. Wear a pair of black leggings with this Friis and Company polka dot scarf, a great pair of boots and simple pair of earrings. Add a little edge with a faux biker jacket.
  4. This is sort of a rustic look. Wear a darker denim with a longer fringe detailed necklace, hoop earrings, a simple set of bangle bracelets and complete the look with these Steve Pembroke western style cropped boots and tan faux leather jacket.
  5. Colored denim is still going to be hot this season. Worn with a pair of leopard flats is very complimentary to this color. Complete the look with a light color blazer. Again adding a statement necklace will balance the look.

The options are endless when it comes to a white tank. Open up that closet and start experimenting!

This Holiday season I will be traveling to Canada, and Minnesota. I can feel the windchill already. Don’t worry, this So Cal living girl was born and raised in Minnesota, I can handle it. I will be taking the inaugural flight from Los Angeles to BC Canada, Big White Ski Resort! I am beyond excited and I cannot wait to strap on my snowboard and fly down the mountain. But first things first…we need to decide on some warm yet stylish essentials. I am all about keeping warm and toasty but that doesn’t mean you have to look like a mountain climber. Winter accessories can still be chic and keep you from getting frostbite.

I love the twist on these classic Sorel Boots, the Juicy Couture faux fur headset and scarf are awesome but would be a bit much worn together.  The sweater leggings from the Gap are a must and well I don’t travel anywhere without my Stephanie Johnson cosmetic bags. I also like to pack an easy crossbody tourist day bag for just the essentials when wondering though the town. These are my winter travel picks, they are neutral enough to match just about anything, cozy, warm, and girly with just a bit of sparkle.  Just add your favorite pair of jeans and leggings and your good to go!
