This SmartStraw Monaco Sun Hat was the perfect hat to keep me in the shade and protected from the sun’s harsh rays. Coolibar is a company that makes 50+ UVA sun protective clothing and accessories for women, men and children. They have swim trunks, pants, shirts, sun hats and cove-rups for the whole family. I’ve read more guides that tell me to pack the kitchen sink than I care to admit. I made the overpacking mistake once when we took my oldest on his first plane ride at 3 months old. I will never make it again.

In almost 4 years of traveling with kids the only things that have been added to our baggage load are a stroller, car seats, and one tiny backpack my toddler insists on bringing even though 90% of the time he doesn’t carry it.

So what do you actually need to pack up when you head to the airport for the first time with your new baby? It’s simple; about the same things you use every day at home and when you go to the grocery story.

Plane travel- your carry on bag

These days I prefer to carry on my big purse and a backpack when traveling with my kids. I can fit way more into the backpack, throw in my own items, like that Kindle I may get to use for 3 minutes while the baby naps and my laptop, and it can double as a daypack for hubby to carry while we explore our destination. Plenty of fabulous baby bags and diaper bags are out there though. Find your favorite and make sure it looks fabulous. No one wants to look like a slob while jet setting around the globe. What should go in your bag?

• Diapers and wipes
• One change of clothing for baby
• One extra top for you
• Burp cloth
• Bottles and formula for trip length (plus enough formula to cover 2-3 extra feedings in case of delays)
• Nursing cover up (I love to add a wide scarf to my outfit and use that instead of packing one more thing)
• Pacifiers
• Nap lovies or blankie
• Small baby blanket
• One toy (up to 3 depending on the age of baby)
• Baby carrier (I love my ErgoBaby Sport)
• Squeeze packs of baby food, 2 spoons and 1 bib (if baby is eating solds)

Cars eats and strollers may be gate checked before you board the plane. Ask the ticket agent for a tag for your stroller. If you are not bringing your car seat on board the plane (it must be FTA approved) you will need a tag for that as well. There is no charge to check either of these items at baggage or the gate.

Note: TSA policy states that you can bring breast milk, ice packs for breast milk, formula, and baby food through security. It will be subject to inspection just like all of your other liquids, but you do not have to adhere to the 3oz rule here. Just keep the quantities reasonable for the length of your flight. If an agent gives you a hard time, or tries to deny you this right, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Lighten the load

Not everyone wants to be bogged down by extra baby gear when they travel. Check out alternatives to packing your own baby gear in the destination you are flying to.

• Look into renting car seats when you arrive. Most rental car companies do offer them for an extra fee.
• Ditch your giant stroller for a simple umbrella stroller. If baby is young enough think about wearing your little buddle in your favorite carrier. She will be happier snuggled up with you.
• Ask your hotel if they have a crib you can use, or look up baby gear rental agencies in the area. Many are very reasonably priced.

Check the bag

Unless you are going on a very short trip, you may want to check your main suitcase. I know plenty of families who only do carry on, but for me, I like to dump everything and walk on with as little as possible. Let me tell you, that is still plenty.

I only pack the bare minimum when it comes to toiletries, unless I am leaving the country. I can always buy more when I get there. The same goes for diapers, wipes, formula and baby food. I bring enough to last the first 2 days and then stock up when I arrive. I usually need to grab snacks for my family anyway, so why not add a few more things to the list.

Clothing is the hardest part, but honestly the fashionista in me has more trouble paring down my own wardrobe more so than my kids. If I am traveling for a week here is what I will pack for my baby boy. If I know I will have access to laundry I will cut this list almost in half.

• 7 tops
• 7 bottoms
• 7 socks
• 2 pairs of shoes
• 1 hooded sweatshirt
• 1 hat (sunhat or ski cap depending on temperature)
• Medications: small bottle of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and vitamins
• Baby tooth brush (if he has teeth)

As you can see you really don’t need to pack the kitchen sink, especially when traveling with a baby. You are entertainment enough, and many items can also pull double duty (ex. stroller can also be a high chair). Think about what you absolutely have to have and won’t be able to find at your destination, and then start packing.

There were Corolle dolls beautifully displayed everywhere and stations were set up where little (and big) ones could give their baby dolls a bath, feed them in a highchair, push them around in a stroller, or pick out some fancy new duds for their wee friends. There were also tables for crafts (courtesy of Jo-Anns Fabrics and Crafts), a caricature, a mini nail station to get manicures and the most amazing dessert table provided by Jenny Cookies. Kid-friendly crepes were made to order along with finger-food items like grilled-cheese sandwiches and turkey paninis.

And the event wasn’t just all about fun and games. All guests brought brand-new packages of diapers and wipes which were all to be donated to Baby Buggy, a non-profit organization that is committed to providing families in need across the U.S. with the essentials they’ll need to raise their children, ages 0-12. Hundreds of Corolle dolls were also donated to the organization.

All in all, the event was a huge hit. My daughter had the time of her life running around and playing “mom” to her baby doll. The bathing station was the biggest hit among all the kids. What kid doesn’t love playing with water?! We had never heard of Corolle dolls prior to the event, and now we’re huge fans!

What is my passion?

That’s easy: traveling. That is my passion. I LOVE to travel. But what is it about travel that gets me so riled up and excited?

It’s experiencing something new, seeing new places, eating new food, meeting new people and living in the moment. Am I a history or geography buff? No. I am a live-life-to-its-fullest-and experience-as-much-as-you-can kind of girl and seeing the world makes me ridiculously happy. I want to see and experience it all and I want to give the gift of travel to my kids. At my core, I am a HELL YES type of person, it’s just who I am.

Definition of Passion:

1. Strong or barely controllable emotion

2. A state or outburst of such emotion

Traveling is the only thing that I have a “barely controllable emotion” about. When talking about travel I can barely form an intelligent sentence. Even as I write this every fiber in my body is on fire. Most people do not get to live their passion every day. In fact, telling people to “find their passion and do what you love” is very cliche and can evoke some negative reactions, because let’s face it – passion doesn’t exactly pay the bills. So telling people to go live their passion can piss people off. Passion is something most people do in their free time, after work or on the weekends. And only the lucky few get to actually live their passion and turn it into what they do for a living.

My very first blog was “Have Kids Still Travel.” My husband and I started it when we took our kids, Hudson only 12 months old and McKenna barely 2 ½, to Barcelona, Spain for one month. This was a blog for mainly the Grandmas to see their babies while we were gone. I had no idea how to blog yet or really what a blog even meant. We wanted to prove to people that we could still travel even after having kids. Our next one month trip with the kiddos was to Costa Rica and once again I only updated the site with pictures and small blog posts for my family to see.

When we came home from Costa Rica I started Savvy Sassy Moms and Have Kids Still Travel simply fell by the wayside. I saw an opportunity to create a business with a Savvy Sassy Moms and over the years have worked extremely hard to make it a profitable one. I didn’t really see how I could make money traveling. But while I have been building Savvy Sassy Moms, a piece of my heart and passion was left over on Have Kids Still Travel. Not to get into the nitty gritty of personal struggles, but building Savvy Sassy Moms a business was also out of necessity. I needed to help support our family. My husband’s passion as it turns out is being a bit of an online serial entrepreneur and well, that passion creates a lot of financial peaks and valleys sometimes.

I don’t want to just talk about my passion and dream about it. I want to live it. So, we are moving to Costa Rica on June 30th. The tickets have been bought and we are getting rid of almost everything.

That’s right, we’re doing it.

This is not being handed to us. We are not moving to Costa Rica with some large lump sum of cash or with some crazy inheritance from a dead relative. We have worked hard building our online businesses, sacrificed some things, have saved and made plans for this. We’ll also have to continue to work hard while we are on this adventure. You’ll be able to follow all of it, the good, the bad and the ugly over on WanderlustLiving.com (coming soon).

In the beginning I told you that travel is my passion but I think it goes deeper than that, my passion might actually be: Living an extraordinary life and experiencing everything that I possibly can.

When you are passionate about something and truly want something nothing will get in your way. I believe you can live the exact life you want to live, if you are willing to make the right, and sometimes tough choices that help you get there. Anything is possible people.

What is your Passion?

*I am currently working as a brand ambassador for Cracker Barrel Cheese – they are clearly passionate about their award-winning cheese. They asked me to write about my passion and it could not have come at a better time. This is a sponsored post, but gosh don’t you love brands that aren’t just about their product but admire and respect passion?

It finally hit 70 degrees here in Minnesota! We were so anxious to shed our Winter coats, hats and boots and hit the stores for for new Spring and Summer fashions. We filled bags with dresses, shorts, tank tops and sandals. We are so ready to get some sun.

The pools will be open in the next few weeks, so it’s also time to grab a few swimsuits to get us ready for pool, beach and sun!

Let me just say right now that I am not a prude, nor do I have an issue with a bikini on a young girl or tween girl. I say you need to buy, and your girls should wear what you all are comfortable wearing. I always wore a bikini as a little girl and I sometimes wear one know. However, my daughters have never expressed an interest in them as I think they are more comfortable with a suit that doesn’t have ties and covers a little more so they don’t spend time pulling at it to keep covered or watching their top come off after a dive off the board.

There are some great bikinis that I found that don’t have tie straps that both my daughters tried on this year, but they both ended up wanting tankinis again as I think they are just more comfortable in them when they don’t have to worry about it coming off or messing with lots of ties…and a tankini still has the convenience of being a two-piece suit for easy bathroom visits and changing on the run!

Here are some of the suits we found this year that my tween daughters love and I completely approve of…

This Gap neon chevron strip tankini has beading at the ties, cute ruffles, and a great halter style. Justice red polka-dot tankini. I Love the retro styling and cute dot pattern. Neon, patterns, disco and funky can only describe this awesome suit from P.S. Aeropostale. No wonder my 8 year old loves it. I also love the look of this surf suit from Mini Boden, also available at Nordstroms. The boy shorts provide a little more coverage and comfort and awesome style.

Gap assemetrical off the shouler one piece has great colors, style and floral pattern. A little more grown-up with more coverage. I love the rainbow colors and animal print of this standard one piece from P.S. You cannot go wrong with a limited edition suit from Diane Von Furstenberg for Gap. I love her exclusive collection and the price is sure right!

What style swimsuit do you love – are you a bikini, tankini, surf suit or one piece girl?

This last weekend I had the pleasure of going to the UGG store here in Los Angeles at The Grove. I got to see their new Spring/Summer lines and try on shoes. Yes, I was in my own personal heaven. However, the best part was that not only did I get to take home a pair of shoes, but my whole family got to take home a pair of shoes too. Given the fact that they are my children, they were very excited about this. We were lucky enough to be greeted with wonderful staff, and had a great time at the UGG store.

Family of UGG Shoes

I got the Lauri in Harissa (as you can see above I had a hard deciding on color).
Taking Our Shoes Out For a Spin

We didn’t go home though. We took our UGG shoes out for a spin to the Los Angeles Zoo. Whats a better way to celebrate the Moroccan Safari inspiration of the UGG Spring/Summer line then the zoo right?

We arrive at the zoo and my boys, who each had to have their own copies of the maps, stopped at the huge life sized maps to map our course and navigate where we should go first. My husband and I were dumbfounded by the fact that they had maps in their hands, but still had to stop at the “big one” to make sure we went the right way. Then we remember that is the whole point of fun time at the zoo.

Our first stop was the flamingos. Wow are they loud creatures.

The Comfort of UGG

Well as you can see the shoes I got are wedges. Anyone who has been to the LA Zoo will think I’m nuts. It’s a very hilly zoo, and on top of that we had epic heat. However, I have to tell you that I did not regret my decision for one moment. I couldn’t control the heat, but my comfort climbing hills in my wedges was great. As a matter of fact I only changed into my flip flops on the way down because it was steep and I really felt like I would fall. My feet started to hurt once my flip flops were on. I wished I hadn’t changed my shoes.

Our zoo adventure was a fun day with kids happily climbing hills and never complaining about their feet hurting all the live long day. We saw the zebras, and my daughter said “look it’s Marty” (she’s referring to the zebra in Madagascar). We saw the giraffes and there was a baby giraffe. It was so cute! Did you know that giraffes are born at 6′ tall? The new elephant exhibit is beautiful, and they did a fantastic job. We even got a glimpse at the tigers playing ball in the water.

Not only did we get some great shoes, and have a fun family day, but my kids have not stopped wearing their shoes since. Every time they’ve had to put on shoes they’ve gone to get their UGG shoes. Now those are some comfortable shoes.

Disclosure: Not only was my family outfitted with a pair of shoes, but I was supplied with tickets for us to go to the zoo. However, the opinion above is my own, and I thank UGG for our shoes, and fun day at the zoo.

The Vogue Hood option – allows parents to add color to their stroller. The designability parents have over the Snap 4 is very appealing. Pick up a Vogue Hood in every color, each color to match your outfit for the day!

Lightweight and Compact – allows an incredible about of ease of use in a stroller. I have never been so impressed with a stroller as I have with the Snap 4. It is light, it is easy to fold and it fits in the truck of my car easily without taking up too much space.

It’s nice enough to wear skirts and dresses, and my 32 week uncomfortable pregnant self is ecstatic. No more squeezing into jeans for this mama! I am always a big lover of clothing that can be worn during pregnancy and after as well, and this skirt I scored from American Eagle will be perfect for that. It has a stretchy elastic waist, so it will accommodate a large baby belly, but can be worn just as easily post-partum. I love the bright coral colour of the skirt for spring (and summer!). I can also see this skirt being worn with a striped tee and denim jacket! I wore flat gladiator sandals with this outfit, but you could also swap them for a pair of heels or comfy wedges to amp up the look. I’ve been lucky to have a very uncomplicated and healthy pregnancy so far, and it has made this experience the second time around so enjoyable. I’ve been staying consistent with prenatal yoga, birth ball exercises and my nightly cup of red raspberry leaf tea, so I’m hoping this body is ready to birth a baby and my goal of having a VBAC will be accomplished!

A birth announcement is your own personal way of showing off your precious new bundle, and as always, Etsy did not disappoint in helping me to find tons of great announcements.
The birth of our second baby is rapidly approaching, and I’ve been scouring the internet to find special birth announcements to help introduce our newest family member to the world. While looking around, I knew that I didn’t want any ho-hum announcement. I wanted something that can convey our personality while remaining on-trend and beautiful.

A birth announcement is your own personal way of showing off your precious new bundle, and as always, Etsy did not disappoint in helping me to find tons of great announcements. I knew that I could turn to Etsy to find birth announcements that not only were unique, trendy and chic, but also wouldn’t completely destroy my wallet. With the birth of a new baby, you have a lot of other expenses going on, and the expense of birth announcements can seem quite unnecessary. Luckily Etsy has several options that can work for you and your budget.

Are you expecting a sweet little girl? Preparing for a handsome baby boy? I found amazing birth announcements for both genders that lucky recipients will be overjoyed to display on their fridge Another bonus is that most of these announcements have the option of either being sent to you as a digital file for you to print out yourself, or they can also be printed out by the shop owner. Take a look below at my favourite birth announcement finds from Etsy.

I was thrilled to curate a this section by enlisting not only some of my favorite brands but partnering with some of my favorite websites as well. Everything right down to the carpet and the sweet treats in the Oh Baby! Style Suite were carefully selected. (Project Nursery founder and FLOR laying expert Melisa Fluhr) FLOR sponsored the amazing carpet tiles which were bold and beautiful making the Oh Baby! style suite a popular stop for the attendees throughout the day.
I have to say, there could not be an Oh Baby! Style Suite without Stokke. One of the most innovative and stylish strollers on the market and a Savvy Sassy Moms favorite. With the release of two new Stokke strollers, the light weight and more compact Scoot and the Crusi. The Crusi is the first double stroller from Stokke and this sharp sophisticated black melaange fabric was a real show stopper. Everyone did a double take and stopped to check it out. Also on display was the popular Tripp Trapp highchair and the Stokke MyCarrier.
