Category : Look For Less

Keeping up with current fashion trends can be very expensive. As moms, we love our leggings and yoga pants for around the house. Still, we want to look good when we have the opportunity to get out and interact with other adults. Working parents have the added challenge of creating a fashionable wardrobe for the office without breaking the bank. Finding online deals takes stress out of shopping for fashionable clothes.

Consider buying used items

People without children can probably find time to search through items at consignment stores. However, parents often find the only time they can shop online is after the kids go to bed. The good news is just because we’re shopping with our devices instead of our feet, we can still find great deals on gently used items.

There are many options for finding used clothing online. One of the most well-known sites to use for buying all sorts of things is eBay, and they have listings for pretty much anything. Their site provides a variety of ways to limit your search, so you can find the size, brand, or even color that you want. The downside to eBay is that the listings will include many outdated items.

Online shoppers can find more recent clothing items for sale on sites like thredUP. If you’re looking for something like a special occasion dress, you can also save money by renting designer dresses through sites like Rent the Runway.

Search for coupon codes

You will be amazed at how many coupon codes are available for pretty much every website out there. Before you finalize your transactions, check to make sure that you do not forget to apply discount codes. A simple search for “discount codes” and the name of the site should yield a couple of different options for you to try.

Try to apply several codes to your transaction, because you may be able to combine a couple of different offers. If you’re having trouble finding a coupon code that works, always check out the homepage for the site. Deals are often highlighted there to entice shoppers to venture further into the site.

Search for trendy, off-brand clothing

We all have our favorite brands, but branching out and trying alternatives can give you the look without the high price. Be honest; no one really looks at the tags on your clothing. I’ve been pretty impressed with the affordable clothing offered on Amazon. They have trendy-looking items for really low prices.

Plenty of other sites offer cheaper versions of your favorite styles. They might not be heirloom quality, but if you’re someone who is continually updating their closet, it may be a good option.

Take advantage of rewards programs and sales

If you are hopelessly devoted to any specific stores or brands, make sure to earn some rewards for your loyalty. Sign up for email newsletters, and you can receive coupons and learn about upcoming sales. Don’t forget about planning ahead to make purchases during yearly sales or special holiday promotions. Some brands and sites that reward repeat customers with discounts you can apply towards future purchases.

Some sites and brands that only offer special pricing on special occasions. You can still save some of the cost by using a credit card with a cash-back or another type of reward program. Any easy way to find these reward programs is by going to Google and typing the name of your favorite online store followed by rewards or loyalty program. Just make sure to pay off your balances in full, or else the interest charges will cancel out your rewards.

Look for free shipping — and shop strategically

Finally, shipping charges are a sneaky way to end up paying even more for your online purchases. Most sites offer free shipping once your purchase adds up to a certain amount. Make sure you’re not paying $15 for shipping, when you could add on a small item and get everything sent to you without any extra charges.

Staying up to date with current trends is going to be expensive if you are an impulse shopper. By being more strategic with your spending, it is possible to save quite a bit of money. The keys are planning ahead and thinking a little outside the box. A little extra effort can help you be both fashionable and frugal.

There’s nothing easier than throwing on a dress in the summer. It’s one piece so there’s no fuss, easy to pack for a vacation and can go from day to night with a change of your shoes. However, as much as we love summer, it will be over before we know it so spending a fortune on new dresses isn’t a great idea. Here’s ten perfect summer dresses that are not only stylish but also budget-friendly which means you’ll have plenty of money left over for those wedges you’ve been eyeing.

10 Perfect Summer Dresses (under $100)

There are three key dress styles to wear this summer: the maxi dress, the sheath/shift dress and the fit and flare. A maxi dress is easily the most comfortable and universally flattering dress of the three styles. The maxi works great as cover-up or can be dressed up with wedges for date night. The fit and flare dress looks great on those with an hourglass figure and flats or heels work with this look. If you have a boyish figure, the fit and flare dress can help create curves where you want them most. The sheath/shift dress is a nice option for those that are pear shaped to slim you out in all the right places.

Malin Ackerman Collage

Recently the girls at Savvy Sassy Moms were inspired by this fabulous Lucy Leather Maternity Jacket by Isabella Oliver worn by pregnant actress Malin Akerman. Now as much as we love it, it does comes with a hefty price tag so we set out to find this look for less for our amazing Savvy Sassy readers. Plus the jacket is made by Isabella Oliver which is a maternity company, so let’s find one for the rest of us non-pregnant ladies.

Look For Less!

We’ll save the best for last…but the base of this fabulously edgy and  chic outfit starts with an asymmetrical lap nude chiffon blouse worn with a pair of basic black leggings.  Riding boots are still a huge part of the current trend and sometimes can be priced a little high so we were thrilled to find these brown buckled leather boots for a very reasonable price. We were able to find a subtle snake skin print scarf by Mossimo at Target for a steal of a deal at $14.99, not a bad price.  For the bag we’ve chosen a Fiorelli black shopper bag similar to the one that Malin Akerman is carrying and of course an inexpensive pair of wayfarer sunglasses.

Now last but certainly not least the jacket that we were all lusting over, though not exactly the same it still carries some of the main characteristics of the Isabella Oliver jacket, it’s just a little more edgy. It has a similar collar and cropped waist line which if worn open will be very reminiscent of this fabulous look for a fraction of the price.

Are you willing to join in on the leather or faux leather jacket trend?

Wouldn’t it be nice if all department stores followed suit? Since it’s likely they won’t, now is a good time to brush up on your department-store shopping skills with these seven tips to save at your favorite stores.

1. Befriend Sales Associates
Though your knee-jerk reaction to eager salespeople may be “I’m just looking,” consider taking them up on their offer to serve you. Better yet, seek them out every time you shop the store. Building a rapport with a sales associate leads to the inside-track on upcoming sales and yields better customer service.

2. Get Smart
Retailers are making it easy to stay informed about upcoming sales, thanks to e-mail alerts and Facebook updates. But how often have you left a coupon at home or failed to print it from your inbox? Mobile coupons to the rescue! Tools like the Coupon Sherpa mobile app give you access to mobile coupons to use in-store. Just pull up the offer and hand your smartphone to the cashier. Phew!

3. Shop Thursdays
While online shopping experiences a spike in sales on Mondays, department stores often mark down clothing on Thursdays in anticipation of weekend shoppers. Save your Saturday for lunch with the girls and a matinee, and turn Thursday afternoon into a savvy shopping day. For more tips on the best times of the week to shop, consult SmartMoney’s guide.

4. Retain Receipts
In an effort to de-clutter our cars, purses and file cabinets, receipts are often tossed immediately after a purchase. However, it’s a good idea to hang onto receipts for up to 30 days should the item you bought receive a price reduction. Keeping tabs on an item you’ve already purchased can score you unexpected savings.

5. Gift Yourself (and Your Wallet)
If you’re anything like me, you’ve already burned through those gifts cards you received over the holidays. Nothing compares to spending someone else’s money on something you want, but using a discount gift cards comes pretty close. Save up to 35 percent instantly when you buy gift cards at less than face value from such sites as GiftCardGranny.

6. Shop Seasonal Sales
This one’s a no-brainer but with “80-percent off” promotions cluttering my inbox, I’d be remiss not to mention it. Shopping for winter clothing as retailers gear up for the spring and summer fashions will land you great deals on warm clothing to wear both now and after beach season is a distant memory.

7. Reward Yourself
Most credit cards have a rewards program, so take a look at your account to determine if you can redeem points for gift cards. If you have the budget and are disciplined enough to pay off your credit card every month, you might consider charging everyday expenses on your card to increase those reward points and pay for “fun” stuff with earned points. If you’re credit card doesn’t earn points, check out this list from to find ones that do.

Printed jeans are HOT this fall season. Not only did color denim explode over the summer but denim has officially gone wild with animal prints, leather fabric, florals, plaid, paisley and even polk-a-dots!  Jumping on this decorated denim trend could cost you a pretty penny, but we have a very cool way to get some printed denim for less!

Current Elliott Paisley Print $198.00Current Elliott Plaid $208.00, Emma in POP jeans $158.00 , Current Elliott Floral $198.00, 7 For Mankind Jacquard $198.00

You could spend a fortune on these looks but we got the tips to do it for less!  All you need is a Clorox Bleach Pen.  Brooke Stewart of Power Moms Media wore these DIY Jeans during the Fashion Forward Conference in New York and everyone was going bonkers for them!  People could not believe that these jeans were a DIY project.

How to DIY: Polka Dot Jeans

1.     Line the inside of the jeans with plastic (such as a cut open plastic shopping bag) to protect the gel from bleeding through from one side to the other.

2.     Shake the Clorox® Bleach Pen® Gel with the cap on.

3.     Begin applying the gel: using the fine point tip, gently squeeze out a 1/4 inch dot.

4.     Continue applying gel dots in a polka dot pattern, working in one direction (such as waist to hem) with the dots you have already applied always away from you.

5.     Allow the dots to sit for 2 hours.

6.     Keeping the jeans flat on the counter/work surface, gently remove the plastic liners from inside the pant legs.

7.     Pour 3% hydrogen peroxide directly onto each of the dots, allowing it to soak into the fabric. This stops the bleaching action, and prevents any gel from lightening other parts of the blue jeans during rinsing.

8.     When all the dots have hydrogen peroxide on them, slide them into the sink a little at a time, scraping and rinsing away the gel dots as you go with warm water.

9.     Squeeze the pants dry using old towels.

10.  Air dry the jeans completely before repeating the treatment on the other side of the jeans.

11.  After rinsing the second round of gel polka dots, run the jeans through a gentle cycle using cool water and a little detergent.

Hard to believe, but that look was created by this little Clorox Bleach Pen!

What I love most about the end of summer are all those fantastic summer sales.  We came across four great timeless summer dresses that you must check out – while many of these pieces can’t be found online, if you head to your local Old Navy or Gap, you may grab these or other pieces like them for a fantastic deal.  These are the types of dresses you can confidently break out next summer and be just as fashionable.

The dresses are made with jersey fabric making them a very comfortable choice for those days you just want to lounge around or run errands but still look fantastic. Each one of these dresses can be easily be dressed up or down which is always a win, win in my book.

1. This braided print dress was one of my favorite summer sale finds. The versatility of this dress allows for you to wear it both casually or for a night out.  The fuchsia color with the ikat pattern is a perfect combination.  This particular style is available in a few solid colors as well if you are not into dresses with a pattern.

2. This contrast stripe dress is a nice comfortable look for those days of just lounging around the house. Dress it up with some cute sandals and it’s ideal for a lunch date or running errands.

3. A strapless maxi dress is a classic look that can be dressed up or down. Well worth the $29 investment.

4. Here is a fantastic asymmetrical dress. I love the way it drapes to the side giving it a sophisticated yet very casual look. It’s light fabric makes it perfect for those really hot days.

What fabulous end of summer sales have you come across lately?
