Falls Must Have Booties

Well ladies, it’s finally here…boot season!  One of my favorite things about Fall fashion are all the beautiful fall boots. Shopping for fall boots can be challenging because there are so many styles and colors to choose from so we are going to break it down for you this season and first up is the fall ankle boots. These ankle boots have a little bit of a heel but not too much so you can still manage to run around town and not be afraid of twisting an ankle. The other great part about ankle boots is that they are easy to slip on and are usually pretty reasonably priced.

Ankle boots also go really well with many different styles of denim. You can easily wear them with your skinny jean, rolled up boyfriend jeans or a pair of cuffed straight leg jeans. They can also be dressed up for date night but be worn pretty casual during the day.  If you are someone that can pull off tights in the winter then pairing your ankle boots with a fun pair of tights and a skirt will be super stylish. Don’t be afraid to

Stovepipe Pants

Stovepipe pants are on-trend and should be on your bod this fall. This cut is a slightly tighter version of straight-leg pant that is fitted to your knee and then falls straight in an unbroken line to your ankle.

We located this most versatile of pants in a crazy-cool low price of $38 by fan favorite designer TopShop. It comes in an array of colors, and can be worn in so many ways. Work, dates, casual, you name it, your stovepipes will be smoking. Check out three ways you can style the basic black stovepipe for your diverse days.

Professional and polished

Wear this to work, an interview or a business event and you will be taken seriously on the style front. Gorgeous camels and understated animal prints are both big this fall and classic staples that will last you longer than your current supervisor. You will get almost as much wear out of a silky tee and modern gold-tone accessories as you will out of the pants.

Cute Wedges and Espadrilles
Summer shoe trends: wedges and espadrilles

Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes the need for new shoes. I mean, really, I can find any excuse for new shoes. One of the hottest trends this summer for shoes is wedges and espadrilles. They just go so well with tan skin and bare legs. I rounded up a few of the cutest ones I could find to help you build your summer collection.

Wedges are comfortable and cute

The great thing about wedges is that they give you the height while being comfortable at the same time. The wedge is a mom’s best friend, as you still look fashionable and can still rock the heels without having to worry about walking on stilts. I am a huge fan of wedges and even prefer them over regular heels, because they combine comfort and style. If you’re chasing around a little one, this combination is key!

Espadrilles to rock all summer long

Espadrilles just scream summer, don’t they? They give off a cute yet casual vibe, and are the perfect vacation shoe. Rock these shoes with a little summer dress or some jean cut offs and big sunglasses, and you’re ready for your day in the sun.

1. Stripe espadrille wedges $60
2. Romantic spring wedges $80
3. Summer wedge sandals $99
4. Nude wedges $160
5. Cut-out wedges $150
6. Yellow espadrilles $45
7. Classic black sandals $140

Shorts are no longer just for tourists, track stars and teenyboppers. In fact, the easiest way to look chic and current this season is to add dressed-up shorts to your style repertoire. Wear them in place of passé Capris or instead of your go-to skirt. Here are seven stylish shorts styles that are crazy cool and we know will look marvelous on you.

C. Wonder Eyelet Short in Navy or White

This lace short is versatile and sweet. The eyelet fabric can be either dressy or playful, and the medium length works for most events. Wear to work with a blazer or button-down, or to a barbecue with sandals.

Zara High Waist Structured Short

This is probably the most universally flattering short we have seen and the price is soooo right. The longer length plus the precise tailoring of the legs will have even the most reluctant shorts wearers pulling on with pride.

BB Dakota Rosabella Short at Piperlime

Love the look of the tiny, flowy shorts that are all the rage now but not sure if you can pull it off? Try these BB Dakotas. The higher-on-the-sides legs will give you the flirty, current look you are going for but your inner thighs will have slightly more coverage. The breezy legs make thighs look slimmer!

Club Monaco April Soft Scallop Short

There are a whole lot of wild floral prints in the shorts sections at the shops right now, but we think a subtle, darker botanical is less likely to wilt. Wear it as you would a skirt, with heeled sandals and a slim cut blouse or knit top.

Lilly Pulitzer Chipper Bermuda Short in Resort White or True Navy

Bermudas are not dowdy — they are classic — and if chosen right will make your legs look leaner than many other styles. The key is to choose ones cut very close to the leg and with a fitted flat front. As the length on these is longer than other shorts, feel free to pair with your highest wedge-heeled sandals.

Citizens of Humanity Ava Cut-Off in Patina, Folsom or Ladera Washes

Cut-offs. Jean shorts. Jorts. Whatever you call them, they are back in style, but trickier to pull off post-college. The goal is too look chic, casual and on-point without looking like a music festival wannabe. Achieve the happy medium by selecting a pair made from premium denim in a shade of classic blue. Choose a pair that fits you up top without a hint of spillage and covers the meatiest part of your inner thigh. The incidence of frays, slashes and pockets peeking out below the leg should decrease with age.

Rebecca Taylor Printed Short on Zappos

A relaxed fit in a playful but trendy pattern such as animal or camo gives shorts a fashionista air. We like these easy, pleated, flared pair. With a statement print, the rest of your outfit will be a subtle breeze.

What is your favorite shorts style? Where did you find your fav pair? Share in the comments!

Best of Summer Beach Bags

If you are looking for the perfect beach bag this summer than we have got some stylish beach bags picked out for you!  Now, every Mom knows that she needs at least two beach bags, one for all the kids gear and one for her own summer must haves. You may even need another one for all the beach towels too.

I usually have a beach bag for all the sand toys and kids stuff, much like this Saltwater Beach Bag, and then I have one for all my beach bag must-haves that cannot get wet. Your beach tote or “mom’s beach bag” should carry your tablet, iPhone, magazines, sunscreen, sunglasses, car keys, room key, lip gloss, and wallet.  Some beach bags can certainly pass for a day tote and not really resemble a beach bag at all, these are a great choice to use as your summer handbag.  No one wants to carry around a heavy leather bag during the summer so look for a stylish bag that can do double duty and still carry all your mom essentials and some emergency snacks for the kiddos.

A beach bag is the number one accessory of summer, followed closely by sunglasses! So depending on whether you’re hitting up the local pool with toddlers in tow, traveling to an exotic island with your husband or sitting poolside with your girlfriends I think you deserve a new beach tote.

Summer Travel Style

Summer vacation is coming and packing should not be stressful, which is why I am here to help! I love to travel and I love fashion so looking good and comfortable while traveling is important to me. There are plenty of ways to dress while on vacation that does not make you look like a tourist or scream Mom, so leave the khaki capris at home ladies.

Travel Light Ladies:  Overpacking and bringing your entire shoe collection is OUT. Opt for less is more and keep it casual. Most summer destinations will not require your fancy heels or a whole lot of jewelry.

Maxi Dresses & Swimsuits

These two items are the first things you should pack in your suitcase. A maxi dress is the easiest summer outfit on the planet but be careful not to over do it on the maxi dress and be sure to find the right length and fit for you  Pack two or maybe mix in a maxi skirt, and use our tips on 3 ways to wear a maxi skirt. These are perfect for day time and going to dinner at night.

Swimsuits are clearly a necessity for any summer vacation and I say pack two.If you will be doing a lot of water activities then pack maybe a sportier one and then one for lounging poolside. One piece swimsuits can be super flattering and still sexy so don’t feel pressure to sport a bikini if you’re just not feeling it.

Gladiator Sandals, Wedges & Flip Flops

Find some sandals and wedges that are a neutral color and can go with just about anything you pack. If you stick to my packing rule of packing things that can easily go with one another or are in a similar color palette, then this will make packing shoes very easy.  Wedges will make your legs look great with shorts and a flat pair of sandals are a must for walking around sightseeing. A pair of flip flops are a must for hanging out around the pool and hitting the beach.

Sunglasses, Hat & Carryall

Sunglasses are the most important summer accessory!  Not just for sun protection but to keep your make-up minimal.  Which is why having a hat is a must too, No one wants to spend an hour blow drying their hair for it to just wilt in the humidity. When you are not feeling a hat, try these 5 easy hair buns for Moms. Find a handbag that is a great carryall, one large enough to hold your camera, phone, chargers, water bottle, small snacks and sunscreen.

Flowy Tank Tops & Tunics

Loose fitting tank tops look good with denim shorts and boyfriend jeans, they are casual yet cool. When you are traveling with kids the last thing you want is for tight and restricted clothing to be creeping up on you as you move around.  These tanks also make you feel like you can eat that extra scoop of ice cream;) Tunics can be a great way to dress up jeans at night and if you find one long enough it can double as a pool coverup.

Denim shorts & boyfriend jeans

Not all of us are blessed with Giesele’s legs, so if you are more comfortable wearing boyfriend jeans then go for it. Boyfriend jeans are loose and comfortable the more you wear them, which is why they are great for traveling.

Light weight scarf

A scarf is a traveling must have, doesn’t matter where you are going, always bring a scarf. Scarves are great for the chilly flight and dressing up a tank top at night, but they also make for a great sarong if it is large enough. A scarf is also a great souvenir from your trip, you’ll always remember where you got it.

What did I miss ladies?

Think Bond Girl, not Pool Mom

Forget the tankini or those skirted suit bottoms moms are always wearing. The most chic choice for a hot mama at the beach or pool is a one-piece swimsuit. A one-piece works on bodies curvy or straight, slender or voluptuous. Swap out your swim dress for a maillot and evoke instant glamour! One-pieces are practical for running after kids and are still a youthful look. They are more conducive to actual swimming — not to mention boogie-boarding and body surfing — than skimpy bikinis or floppy-in-the-water tankinis. A one-piece is a stylish suit that is always a classic. Here are four fabulous one-piece swimsuit looks to try this summer.

Black and White

Black and white suits are everywhere, and they are a slenderizing choice. Use black and white colorblocking to strategically highlight with white and minimize with black. Do not be afraid of stripes! Stripes at the smallest part of your waist are crazy flattering. Stripes with overlapping panels, chevrons and zigzags and achieve the opposite effect of those dreaded horizontals.

1. Double Strap Virginia by River Island at asos 2. Diva Dream Bandeau Stripe at South Beach Swimsuits 3. Bandeau Maillot by Badgley Mischka at Nordstrom 4. Let’s Bond by La Blanca at Zappos

Solid Plunge Front

Go ahead, highlight your cleavage. Seriously. Save the modesty for church. A V-neck, dramatic front is actually more flattering to the bust than a high neck, and this cut is forgiving if you have a bit of a belly. Keeping your plunge front suit in a solid color will keep it classy.

1. Bayside by Splendid at Zappos 2. Plunge Halter by Vitamin A at Everything But Water 3. Shoulder Maillot by Vince Camuto 4. Weekender by Zinke at Piperlime
Modern Botanical

These ain’t your grandma’s floral swimsuits! If you choose a light-colored botanical with modern flair, no one will mistake you for an attendee of water aerobics. Stay away from navy, purple and black backgrounds and seek out interesting details and low backs.

1. Touche Evanthe Maillot at anthropologie 2. Modern Garden Cross Back at Trina Turk 3. Ruched Asymmetrical at Garnet Hill 4. Under the Sun Bandeau by Maaji at South Moon Under
Awesomely ’80s-Inspired

There is a reason those Amazonian supermodels of the late ’80s were always rocking a one-piece: this suit style is so flattering on an hour-glass or athletic figure. Pick out a bright color or an Aztec-influenced pattern for a look that is vintage cool. Mesh inserts or Bodyglove-zippers are fun also fit the vibe.

1. Jade purple suit by Luz at The Cools 2. Malibu fluorescent yellow suit at American Apparel 3. Mayan one-piece lingerie strap tank by Becca by Rebecca Virtue at Everything But Water 4. Pro Mesh Racerback Maillot by Juicy Couture
Which one-piece swimsuit look is your favorite?

Boyfriend jeans are the perfect spring pant. You can dress them up, dress them down and they remain on-trend with the spring 2014 styles. Finding a pair that fits you well is key, as the perfect boyfriend is an easy fit that remains close to your body… often a fine line to balance.

Boyfriend jeans are great on all body types

I love how a cuffed boyfriend jean is a great figure equalizer. Whereas gazelle model types can rock a skinny jean admittedly better than a regular gal such as myself, any lady can look bodacious in a boyfriend jean. The most important fit factor is a boyfriend that fits you sleekly in the hips and booty, and provides an easy leg without leaving your calves and thighs swimming in denim.

Affordable and chic

While I had previously subscribed to the idea that expensive jeans are a necessary evil to get a good fit, I was pleased to discover a new, affordable boyfriend jean that completely rocks! dENiZEN from the Levi’s brandavailable at Target, makes a beautiful boyfriend jean — the dENiZEN Straight Leg Crop — that is priced for a mere $27.99.

I found that dENiZEN jeans (available in sizes 2-18) naturally run a bit big, so you do not need to size up to get that slouchy-but-not-sloppy look. The dENiZEN Straight Leg Crop gave great fit with a mid-rise, fitted seat, and lots of stretch for relaxed but polished legs.

I styled my pair of dENiZEN jeans two different “outfit of the day #ootd” ways to show you how a size 10, 5’7, mom of three can wear these jeans in real life. With a mixture of high and low, dressy and casual pieces, these jeans work well for both work and play.

This is how I would wear the boyfriend jeans for a business casual meeting or professional daytime event this spring. The key elements for dressing up your boyfriend jeans are a sleek, heeled shoe and keeping all the other items in your outfit more formal than the jeans themselves. I am long-waisted, so I like to tuck in my shirt and belt the jeans to give the illusion of a longer leg.

As a freelance writer, admittedly I have more opportunities to wear my boyfriends in a relaxed fashion. This is how I would style them for meeting friends, volunteering at my kids’ school or dashing around town. To keep the look less overtly soccer mom, I still think you need a bit of a heel for your shoe when wearing a boyfriend jean. Although TOMS, canvas sneaks or flat sandals look great with other spring pants, a heel really balances the slouch of the boyfriend for a more flattering line. I am a fan of a wedge-heeled sandal for comfort and cuteness.

But enough about me: How would YOU style these dENiZEN boyfriend jeans?

Thanks to dENiZEN by the Levi’s brand for Target for providing the writer with a pair of jeans for review.

Aahhhh the maxi dress. The way moms can still kinda-sorta wear yoga pants but all the while look like they’re dressed up. They are, after all, crotchless yoga pants you know. Some very brilliant woman was like, “I want to be comfortable like I’m wearing yoga pants but not actually be wearing yoga pants.” And the maxi skirt was born.

They really are perfect and can be worn a ton of ways. Today I am going to show you how to wear a maxi skirt three different ways.

how to wear a maxi skirt

Casual everyday Look

maxi dress casual

Let’s start with the obvious maxi look — the everyday black maxi that goes with just about anything, old Beatles tank top and some casual kicks that you can’t see. A pair of Converse here would work just fine. You’re comfy, cute and still wearing a skirt. You could even throw on a ball cap and head to your kid’s game, it’s that versatile!

Dressed Up

maxi dress drssed up

I just realized you can see my son in the reflection taking this picture. So funny! I wonder what he’s gonna think in a couple years about taking pictures of his mom’s outfits…. Anyway! This is a little more dressed up. The material of the skirt is still very comfortable but I paired it with a nicer top that scoops low in the back and a pair of strappy sandals. I love the thin yellow belt to tie it all together. And just like that you’re ready for a summer wedding.

As a Dress

maxi skirt as a dress

This has to be one of my favorites. I actually wore this to church today. This maxi skirt is a little on the shorter side for me (I’m 6 ft tall), so instead of giving it the boot, I just pulled it all the way up, slapped a belt on and BAM I have a super cute dress! It is even somewhat of a high-low dress because of the way you pull it up. This can easily be paired with a cute jean jacket or light sweater. I like my booties with it because they match the belt, but you could also pair it with sandals as well.

So there you have it! Three ways to wear a maxi skirt. Like I mentioned, there are a ton of other options for sure, this is just to get you started.

What are your favorite ways to wear a maxi skirt?
