As you may have heard, in 2012, Jessica Alba launched The Honest Company.  A company dedicated to bringing family products that are safe, Eco-friendly, stylish, convenient, and affordable.  They launched with a collection of completely toxic-free cleaning products as well as baby diapers and wipes.

This past week, she launched a further extension of this passion for healthy family living with a book, “The Honest Life”.

047
Savvy Sassy Moms was excited to attend an event where The Honest Company and The MOMS Celebrate Jessica Alba and her new book “The Honest Life” at the Mondrian Los Angeles.

TheHonestLife

The event was great!  We spent the afternoon at the swanky Mondrian Hotel LA we were each able to sit down with Jessica to talk about the book.  She is not only beautiful actress, but more importantly a down to earth Mom who really is out for the best interest of her family!

She provided tips on how create a healthy environment in your home including: Taking your shoes off at the door so that you do not track in the chemicals from the world, open the window to let the fresh air in, and to read labels so that you know what you are bringing in your home.

When I asked her as one working mother to another what she does to prioritize and what she feels she has to let go to the waste side.  Her very genuine answer was that her kids happiness was her number one priority and that everything else falls a very low second.  She mentioned that by juggling so many things she has learned to give up perfection and to cut herself some slack.  Both very important lessons that we think all Mom’s need to remind themselves!

2013-03-151

In her book she not only reveals tips healthy living but how to make it fun, real and stylish.  She also shares strategies for maintaining a clean diet (with recipes), tips on beauty, fashion, and DIY kids activities.  Basics for living everyday naturally and authentically!

Last week in Hollywood, hundreds of expecting and new moms came together for “The Biggest Baby Shower Ever” event, hosted by Big City MomsI was lucky enough to attend and boy did it live up to its name.

With dozens of vendors participating including Joovy, the Honest Company, Baby Jogger, Mama Mio, Mustela, UppaBaby and more, there were plenty of giveaways, samples and more to be had. I’ve never seen so many baby products in one location. So much to learn, and so much to add to my registry!

Celebrity parents including Giuliana Rancic, Beverley Mitchell, James and Kimberly Van der Beek and Bill Horn and Scout Masterson (“The Guncles”) came to check out the latest and great must-haves for mommy and baby.

Giuliana Rancic hosted a VIP meet and greet session with Born Free where she greeted hundreds of expecting moms and talked about her mommy must-haves, baby Duke, and life as a working mom.

Beverley Mitchell, who is due in just three weeks, came to check out all the fun product finds and to support her friends Bill and Scout who were speaking on baby product trends. She was feeling “a little ginormous” but was in great spirits all evening, and had lots of energy to tour the entire event, talk to fans, and share details of her pregnancy. Girl, I can feel you on the “ginormous” front. I’m just five months, but I am very round. She was great.

Kimberly Van Der Beek, James Van Der Beek

James Van der Beek came to support wife Kimberly who spoke to the crowd about natural childbirth and her own personal experience — “it was not as easy as my mom had promised,” and was her biggest fan, taking her photo on the red carpet and video taping her entire speech for their personal home videos. So sweet to see them holding hands through out the event. Couldn’t help but love it.

Bill Horn and Scout Masterson came prepped with all of the latest must-have baby products on the market and proved their stellar daddy skills with their product demo for the crowd. The couple were happy to share their entire daddy intel with the guests on-hand. Loved seeing these hands on dads show off their baby loving skills.

Didn’t make it to this year’s event? Check out the Big City Moms website for information on upcoming events and happenings. With any luck, they’ll be coming to a city near you soon!

Awards season might be over, but it doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself like a starlet. Nestled in the famed Beverly Hilton (home to the Grammy’s and other star studded events) is the Belleza Salon where chairs have seen the likes of Sharon Osbourne, Catherine McPhee, Julianna Ranic and more. Just walking from the parking lot through the lobby, you’re bound to see someone famous. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Hayden Paniterie poolside while there.

Walk ins are welcomed but be sure you book ahead for stylist to the stars, Kelley Krueger. If you want to judge a stylist by her own hair, Kelley’s long ombre-colored curled locks and side swept bangs are a great indication of her work.

I went in knowing I need a change. Since the birth of my son a few years ago, my hair has totally changed. It’s now lack luster and the brunette color is more mousy than marvelous. To make matters worse, my current pregnancy is leaving my locks lifeless.
beforeandafter1

Kelley took one look and knew what to do:

Add more layers.
Thin out sections of my heavy hair.
Make a more defined bang so that even if I wore it in a pony tail, I’d still look styled.
Create a wash and go look that would be just as fetching styled as it would air-dried.

But the treatment that really revitalized my tresses was the moisture rich color rinse that was chosen just a shade darker than my natural hair color. It is semi permanent, but safe for pregnant women as it is all-natural and protein packed. It provided a luster and sheen that I hadn’t seen in my hair for several months.

A few snips and a blow out later, I was a new woman. Speaking of blow out, this woman has skills. She walked me throw every step so that I could easily recreate the look at home. So often that’s my frustration when going to a salon. I can never get it to look as good as it did when first styled. But with Kelley’ tips and a little practice, I know I can get there.

As seen on ABC 7 eyewitness news, she offers a blow dry boot camp to helps moms achieve salon results at home. Worth checking out if your part of the round brush challenged crowd like I was.

Pricing is based on hair type and cut, but starts at $50. And color rinse start at $40. Parking is validated for three hours, so take your time.

Hungry? Thirsty? Order lunch or a cocktail from the popular Trader Vics http://www.beverlyhilton.com/Dining/trader_vic.asp while getting your treatment and make an afternoon of it.

Moms, share your hair make over stories with us. How did you get the life back into your locks post baby?

Pantone’s color of the year might be emerald, but for the 2013 Oscars, pale was absolutely the color (or lack of color) of the year!!  The pales ranged from silvers to beige to pink undertone and all kinds of beautiful in between.  The other trend that hit the red carpet in a big way was the metallics.  Statements were being made with blacks with pewter, blacks and  silvers, golds, and so much more. There were a few who went with the bold colors but for those that did their presence was commanded!

The Academy Awards are a time to showcase the work of Hollywood’s actors and actresses.  More importantly, its a time to shine a light on the true glitz and glamour of Hollywood and this years Oscars were certainly no exception.  We saw dresses that sizzled the red carpet and those that may have been better off swept under it!

Here are SSM’s Picks for Oscars 2013 Best and Worst Dressed:

BEST

85th Annual Academy Awards - Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington when against the trend this year and came in the oh so hot color of spring, coral Miu Miu Gown.  We love the simple belt and embellished bust and cannot get enough of  the darker colored coral/orange clutch and shoes!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Stacy Keibler

We loved George’s arm candy, Stacy Keibler, who marveled in metallic wearing Naeem Khan!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Sandra Bullock

Sandra stunned in this lacy sheath dress by Elie Saab

85th Annual Academy Awards - Jennifer Gardner

Jennifer Garner in wine colored Gucci was simple and elegant and the necklace made the look.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts magnified the metallics in this cutout form fitting Giorgio Armani.

WORST

85th Annual Academy Awards - Daryl Hannah

We think Daryl Hannah was channeling her 1984 mermaid character in Splash with this coral “mermaid” shaped gown.  Its more of a sink than a swim!

 Oscars 2013 - Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland in the A-symetrical Donna Karan Atelier was a bit too choppy of a look and the top looked like it may have a wardrobe malfunction.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Anne Hathaway

The typical best dressed Anne Hathaway disappointed in this pale pink Prada.  Questioning A.) what’s going on with the bust area(rhymes with ripples)? B.) why the necklace with such a high neckline?

85th Annual Academy Awards - Fan Bingbing

And then there is Fan Bingbing!  Beautiful shade of pink, but there is a whole lot of pink for not a whole lot of lady.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Salma Hayek

Lastly, there appears to be just a bit too much going on in the neck area of Salma Hayak’s dress and leaves us distracted!

Who were some of your favorites of the night?

Last night MomTrends and I hosted an exciting “What’s in my clutch?”  P & G Beauty Twitter party as we watched the stars arrive for the 70th annual Golden Globes and I have to say, Hollywood sure brought it’s A -game!  There were so many stunning gowns, and the hair and make-up was nothing shirt of perfection.

The biggest trend of the night was the contrast between light and dark!  We saw many classic black dresses but so many celebrities were also wearing beautiful nude toned dresses.  The hair and make-up also followed this trend.  The lips were either dark and matte for a dramatic look or they were natural with heavy shine.   The eyes were dark and dramatic or more natural and soft.

For hair we saw a lot of big curls or waves and hair pulled to the side for a very Old Hollywood vibe.  I typically love it when the hair is pulled back away from the face but some of the ladies really rocked the straight and sleek look last night.  I especially loved all the bangs we saw. We didn’t see as many up-do’s this year, for the most part it was softer and more playful hair styles.

No matter if you are walking the Red Carpet in Hollywood or hitting up your own special event here are my must-have beauty picks for a special night out with or without George Clooney;)

3 Beauty Must haves before the big night….

Screen Shot 2013-01-14 at 12.11.59 PM
It’s all in the eyes and COVERGIRL Clump Crusher by LashBlast Mascara gives lashes 200% more volume and no clumps, guaranteeing your eyes pop on the red carpet or your next big event.  I tried this mascara for the first time this weekend as I headed out to a Hollywood party and I loved it, it went on smooth and no clumping.  My eyelashes had just the right amount of drama.

Probably one of the most important things to put on before a night out is deodorant.  If you want to stay dry all night than the Secret Clinical Strength Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant in Light and Fresh: is the only one you need!  This is honestly the only deodorant I use.  It is clinically proven and doctor-endorsed to provide prescription strength wetness protection. It contains the maximum level of anti-perspirant active offered without a prescription as well as odor-fighting microcapsules, and skin soothing conditioners to keep you fresh all night long.

Keep that hair in place with Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Touchable Volume Hairspray: a non-Aerosol hairspray that delivers flexible hold to fine hair and adds shine without leaving hair stiff or sticky. This leaves that fabulous red carpet ‘do in place all night long.  I have fine hair and I can use all the volume I can get!  I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner to get my hair silky and shiny and then I use the the Pantene Pro-V volume spray to hold my hair naturally in place.

What are some of your beauty must-haves before a big event?

See the Best and Worst dresses of the Golden Globes!

Disclosure: As part of my collaboration with P&G to serve as a P&G Beauty Twitter Party Host, I have received products and been compensated for my time.

We are loving this stunning dress that the fabulously famous mom of three, Kelly Ripa wore to the Unicef Snowflake Ball in New York City. However, we noticed she lacked a little glitz and glam in the accessories department so we’ve come up with a few options to go with this amazing dress.

We’ve chosen both bold and delicate options for this look.

What accessories would you wear?
  • For a bold look we’ve chosen this Cezanne Crystal bib available at Dillards. What I like about this necklace is that it slightly resembles the brocade pattern. The second option is a bit more elegant with a delicate pearl pendant.
  • Moving on to the bracelets, we’ve chosen this feminine three layered freshwater pearl bracelet for a nice delicate version or a sparkly stretch bracelet which would give this dress a little more glamor.
  • Make a statement with these fantastic Kenneth Jay Lane Tear drop earrings or keep the outfit looking simple and elegant with these gorgeous pave pearl studs.

If given the opportunity to wear this fabulous dress here are the options I would choose. Simple all the way! This dress is so stunning and elegant I don’t believe you need to go heavy on the accessories. That being said, I still believe accessories are a necessity.

What would you wear with this dress? Keep it simplistic or give it a bit more glitz and glamor?

Last night we attended the opening night of Disney On Ice, Dare to Dream at the Staples center, but before we even saw the show we were able to skate with the Princesses!  We were invited as friends of Baby Buggy, a charity organization that collects gently used baby products such as strollers, highchairs, toys, clothing and even diapers for families in need.  I am a “friend” of Baby Buggy and have been supporting their mission for over the last year.  Baby Buggy was the non-profit being highlighted for opening night here in Los Angeles and everyone was asked to bring diapers as a donation for families in need.

For the Holiday season downtown Los Angeles has an ice skating rink at LA Live in the Nokia Plaza. The gigantic Christmas tree lights up the ice and all the video screens in the plaza makes the rink a colorful light show on ice.  We skated right along side all the Princes and Princesses.  Cinderella, Tatinana, Rapunzel, Belle, Snow White and Jasmine were all there with their handsome beaus.  After the ice skating we headed into the VIP reception for photos with Mickey Mouse and dinner before the show.

One of the highlights of the night had to be when McKenna spotted Bella from “Shake it Up!” she was so excited but totally kept her cool.  I polietly asked for a picture, she was very sweet anad happily took a photo with McKenna.

Even though my daughter is out of the while Princess phase and my son seemed to be more impressed with the light up toy he got, I was very excited to see Disney On Ice.  I remember my Mom taking me to so many Disney On ice shows  (if not all of them) when I was a little girl.  It was always a special tradition that we did together, just the two of us.

Spoiler Alert:
They tell three Disney stories, The Princess and the Frog, Cinderella and Tangled (which is my favorite).  But they of course have all the classic Disney characters, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald Duck  be apart of the show too.  The opening and grand finale are really both really exciting too.  I was worried the show wasn’t going to have enough “boy” stuff but there were plenty of “boy” characters, fireworks and stunts to keep my little guy entertained.

The show was spectacular, I mean who would expect anything less?
