About the author  ⁄ Katie Kavulla

Having just made the move from big city life to settle down in the town where she and her husband both grew up, Katie Kavulla is a mom of three who strives to slow life down a bit… as impossible as that is with three kids under the age of 10. A blogger turned writer, Katie has spent the past few years combining the things that she loves into a career, with a focus on helping other moms tell their story, because Katie truly believes that every mom has one to tell.

Our team of three hit the 2016 ABC Kids Expo in full-force last month, searching for new products for kids and babies for you to love, as well as getting to visit with some of our longtime favorite brands face to face.

While you’ll be seeing some of our new favorite products popping up as upcoming holiday gift ideas and in posts as we move into the new year, we couldn’t resist letting you get your hands on a few goodies now!

2016 ABC Kids Expo Giveaway on Savvy Sassy Moms

1. Rachel’s Remedy Breastfeeding Relief Packs

It was so fantastic to meet with the founder, Rachel Jackson, at ABC Kids and to see this new product in person. This is the only product on the market that is FDA-approved, as well as being waterproof (moms know how important this is!) to give both hot and cold relief when you need it. Forget having to use a hot wet washcloth to ease your breastfeeding pain or try to figure out exactly how to put cabbage in your nursing bra for good.

Giveaway: Rachel’s Remedy Breastfeeding Relief Pads ($60 value)

2. Skip Hop Stroll and Go On-Call Hand Muff

New from one of our favorite brands to work with and visit at ABC Kids is this cozy stroller hand muff that will keep you warm during winter walks, as well as give you easy access to your phone. Because let’s be honest, we’re all checking it every other second. There’s even a port for headphones for the mamas who really want to get moving on their walk with Baby.

Giveaway: Skip Hop Stroll and Go On-Call Hand Muff, winner’s choice of colors ($35 value)

3. Finn and Emma Play Gym

Admittedly, we love everything from Finn and Emma and their play gyms are no exception. We so appreciate that they find a balance between creating a toy that our little ones love to play with and that looks chic in our home. Plus, with special attention to the materials used to make each play gym — organic cotton toys, non-toxic dyes, lacquer and stain that’s free of lead, mercury, VOCs, nickel and phthalates and more — we can’t help but love this brand.

Giveaway: Finn and Emma Totem Play Gym, winner’s choice of finish ($135 value)

4. Lorena Canals Washable Rugs

We’re not sure why it took so long for someone to invent truly washable rugs, but we’re so thankful that they did. And, that they did it so well. The Lorena Canals booth at the ABC Kids Expo was a sight to see and with their newest designs on on full display, including the Round ABC design and Azteca Collection. We love that each rug is free of toxins and chemicals, so you never have to worry about Baby’s safety.

Giveaway: Lorena Canals Washable Rug, winner’s choice (up to $300 value)

5. Dock-A-Tot Deluxe and Play Arch

If you were following the coverage of the ABC Kids Expo on social media, you probably saw the incredible balloon-ceiling booth from Dock-A-Tot. It was even more magical in person! This beloved brand announced the addition of their new Play Arch, which will launch in 2017. The new mobile toy arch allows babies to safely play and be engaged when they’re laying in their Dock-A-Tot, a brilliant add-on to an already brilliant product.

Giveaway: Deluxe Dock-A-Tot, winner’s choice of patters, plus a gift card to use for the Play Arch when it’s released (over a $200 value)

6. Just Born Sparkle Collection

Let me tell you, there was a lot of ohhing and ahhing when we visited the Just Born booth at the expo. We all fell in love with these gorgeous collections of bedding, layette pieces, nursery accessories and more, including the new Sparkle Collection, which is currently available. Everything was so luxe and soft, but at prices that didn’t make us cringe.

Giveaway: Sparkle Collection Plush Toy and Cuddle Plush Blanket, winner’s choice for both ($50 value)

7. ergoPouch SleepSuits

There were so many sleep sacks this year! But, parents know all too well that not every sleep sack is created equal. (We’ll leave it at that!) It was great to get to see the ergoPouch up close and personal at the expo. There were so many unique features we loved, including the grippy feet on the bottom of the suit for walkers and the 4-way zippers that make it easy for us to get it on and off… and not so easy for our little ones!

Giveaway: ergoPouch SleepSuit, winner’s choice of patterns ($60 value)

8. Pediped Shoes

Getting to see the team from Pediped, along with all of their adorable new shoes for babies, toddlers and kids, is always a highlight of our trip to Las Vegas. We even got a sneak peek at their new limited edition collection that launches this week and, let me be the first to tell you, you’ll want these for holiday.

Giveaway: Pair of Pediped shoes, winner’s choice (up to $60 value)

School is in full swing now and so is fall. And, if your kids are like mine, they’ve already practically run those brand-new back-to-school shoes down to the bones with some serious playground and recess time in the past month!

As we look ahead to fall — and I mean the real fall, the one with rain and wind and puddles to jump in — take a peek at some my favorite picks for girl shoes for the new season to keep her dry and warm, while still holding on tight to her personal style.

Rain, rain, is here to stay

It might not be raining yet where you live, but have no fear, it’s on the way. Since we call the rainy Pacific Northwest home, having rain boots is essential. Trust me when I say that over my 12-years of parenting, my kids have owned practically every brand and style of rain boots available.

The Best Rain Boots for Kids

Kamik was a new brand for us and I was impressed with them the moment I pulled them out of the box. These boots are made for some serious puddle jumping! They’re heavy-duty, while still being flexible enough to run and play in and both my daughter and I loved their slim, streamline fit — they didn’t feel bulky at all.

Kamik Rain Boots for Girls

I was a fan of the details of the Kamik boots, too. The leather stitched details at the top of the boots were a nice finishing touch that gave them a chic, stylish touch that I know will look adorable with her collection of dresses. Moms will also appreciate that their rain boots have a cushioned insole for a perfect fit every time and, of course, they’re 100% waterproof.

(Pictured: Kamik Pepper Rain Boots, $65)

Fall style at its best

My 9-year-old daughter has a style all of her own and I try hard to let her express herself with what she wears. That being said, we don’t always see eye-to-eye on what’s fun (for her) and practical (for me), especially when it comes to shoes.

The Most FUN and Colorful Shoes for GIrls

But, when you turn to a brand like PLAE Shoes, there’s no compromising needed. We’ve been wearing PLAE for years now — they were a lifesaver when our daughter needed extra support for her feet as a preschooler and now, as a busy school-aged girl, she keeps coming back to them and loving them.

For her, the selection of styles and colors is paramount in her love for this brand — can you blame her after seeing these crazy cool metallic purple high-tops? Beyond the way they look, she also loves the way they feel. It’s hard to find shoes with enough room in the toes that aren’t also clunky and chunky, but PLAE does it well. And, of course, having shoes with that super-easy Velcro on-and-off is a must. Who has time to tie shoes when you’re nine and on the go?

Fall Style for Girls

For me, PLAE always a favorite. I can testify to the fact that these shoes last forever… and a day. Your kids will grow out of them long, long before they are lifeless. I also appreciate that they open up so fully to get on — there’s nothing worse than finding shoes your kids love, that appear to be easy to put on, but that fall short of that ease. Lastly, I admit that I’m draw to the way they look, too. I’ll never complain about her wearing sneakers when she has a pair of PLAE shoes to grab from her closet!

What are your girls wearing this fall?

Confession: I’m a total planner geek. And, I’ve been one since long before being one was a thing. Before there were Etsy shops filled with crazy stickers and before washi tape was readily available at your local Target and when finding a good planner was hard to do because there were really only a handful to choose from.

But now, planner geeks are a dime a dozen… and, I say that in the best possible way. The availability of planners, and particularly planners that are designed for moms, are everywhere you turn. And, the accessories? I die with happiness every time I see a new add-on to make my calendar planning a little easier and a little more fun.

Diving into a new planner is one of the highlights of the new school year for me. While my kids are starting fresh at school, I get to start fresh with a new planner to get re-organized and on-track for the year to come. This year, I upgraded to an Erin Condren LifePlanner for the first time. For a mom who has a love for planners, but who also loves simplicity in her planning, this was a crazy huge step for me. And, being a couple months in to using it, I can truly say that it’s good…. very, very good.

Whether you’re already a total planner geek or on your way to becoming one, here are a few things I appreciate about these planners, especially as a mom.

5 Things planner geek moms love

7 Things Planner Geek Moms Love

1. The option to customize

I can’t tell you how many planners I find that I love the inside of… but cringe over the cover. Too girly, too floral, to cutesy, to serious, too inspirational. Considering my planner goes with me everywhere, and is also out on my kitchen counter top most of the day, I want something that truly fits my personal style and look. With the LifePlanner, there are so many options to choose from, you will literally have a hard time choosing a favorite! I went with the sleek and modern look of the LifePlanner in Marble with rose gold accents and it’s a perfect fit for me.

Look Inside the Erin Condren LifePlanner

2. Making the inside just what you need

It takes a while of being a planner geek mom to figure out which layout you prefer in a planner. Weekly? Monthly? By hour or with open days to add what you need to as you choose? I always select the weekly calendar option, mostly because I seem to only be able to think a week at a time! As you’re personalizing your LifePlanner, you can choose from a few different options — a weekly view in a vertical format, a weekly view in a horizontal format, or a weekly view in an hourly format (my favorite!). Additionally, you get to choose if you want a colorful color palette on the inside of your planner, or something a little more neutral, which was my choice.

3. Lasting power gets major points

There have been years when I’ve purchased a planner that I loved, only to have it fall apart just a few months into using it. I admit, I’m not easy on my planners. They get thrown in my purse, trucked around with my laptop, shuffled about on the front seat of my car and stacked on in my kitchen. It’s a rough life for a planner, honestly. I can already tell that my Erin Condren LifePlanner is going to get me all the way through 2017 without worry. The cover is laminated with a super-sturdy, durable seal and the pages are tucked far enough inside the cover to stay protected. Plus, the coils (in a gorgeous rose gold, mind you) are strong, a huge perk for moms who have planners they use every single day.

4. Paper that is on-point

When you upgrade to a planner like those from Erin Condren, you get what you pay for and the first thing you’ll notice, if you compare the LifePlanner to a less expensive version is that the paper in the planner is amazing. It’s thick and smooth and will easily withstand your daily scribbles with your favorite pen. I never have problems with seeing last week’s notes on this week’s pages, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Go ahead, use that Sharpie. You know you want to.

Planners for Moms

5. Accessories make the planner

These days, if you’re considering a planner, you also have to consider the accessories it comes with. Erin Condren has every little thing you might need to go with your LifePlanner. From pencils to stickers to snap-in party planners to elastic bands to keep you organized (my personal favorite!), you can do all of your planner shopping in one spot when you place your order. One of the best things about their planner accessories is that they are so compatible with the LifePlanner — one I love, the StylizedSticky Notes, actually clip right in to the coils of your planner so you’ll always have them handy.

With three school-aged kids, I do a lot of digging through the school lost and found… and I’m always so surprised at what I find in there as I’m searching for stuff that belongs to my own kids — lunchboxes, water bottles, hats, gloves, shoes? School is like a black hole for kids’ clothing and gear and if you’re not keeping a daily tally of everything they take with them each day (um, I’m certainly not!), then things are sure to go missing from time to time.

New Minted clothing labels save the day

The new Minted clothing labels and their already popular name labels are going to keep moms out of the lost and found, once and for all. The labels can withstand the dishwasher and washing machine without skipping a beat, plus, they’re waterproof and non-toxic. And, just like everything else we love about Minted products, they’re designed by independent artists, giving them as much personality as your kiddos.

Water bottle labels for kids

We literally stick these on everything in our house. I would probably stick them on my actual children, if I could find a way to do so. For gear like water bottles and lunchboxes, which seem to go missing at least once a month, the labels are a lifesaver. And, considering there’s at least one other child in each of their classes with the same items, just making sure that they know which blue water bottle is theirs gives both of us a lot of peace of mind.

Visit the Minted Back-to-School Shop to see everything in their school collection.

I couldn’t wait to see how the new clothing labels worked and was so impressed. They are the perfect mini-size to fit on the labels of their clothes and I can certainly see how they will stay on for the entire school year. I loved that you can add your phone number or just keep their name on the labels for easy identification around school. And, of course, getting to personalize them for each child was a hit.

Labels for every age

What I love most of all about the Minted labels is that there is something to cover every age group in our house. My youngest is in 1st grade, so he still thinks its cool to have a big old alien sticker on his gear. My middle child, who is nearly 9-years-old, had quite the opinion about the labels she wanted to use and Minted had a ton of options for her to choose from that were a great fit for her personal style.

New Minted Clothing Labels

And, then, there’s the middle schooler. I’m most concerned about her clothes going missing at school this year for a couple of reasons: First, her clothes are quite expensive now that she’s older, so when a coat disappears, it’s a huge hit. Also, now that’s she’s in middle school, I can’t go riffling through the lost and found like I did when she was in elementary school. It’s her responsibility to keep track of her school gear — including all of her gym gear — and I can’t bail her out when things go missing. At least knowing that her name is somewhere on her coats, backpack, gym shoes, and water bottles gives me peace of mind that if it does get misplaced, it has a chance of finding its way back to her.

You can create your own Minted labels for back-to-school by entering our Savvy Sassy School Days Giveaway. One winner will receive a $100 Minted gift card, along with tons of other prizes.

This post is sponsored by Minted. All opinions are my own, as always.

Cloth or Disposable Diapers.Photo credit: Shutterstock

As sustainable lifestyles and eco-friendly habits have increasingly emerged in the 21st century, cloth diapers have also been trending. Even though they’re certainly a departure from the one-and-done, change-and-pitch disposal diapering, cloth diapers are making a name for themselves as a cost-effective “green” option among lots of new parents.

If you’re totally unsure whether cloth or disposable diapers are right for your family, fear not. Here are the all reasons to choose either one of these great options — based on your biggest diapering considerations.

COST: Cloth

Estimates vary, but one thing’s for sure: If you go with cloth diapers, you will save money. The average family spends a couple thousand dollars (or more) on disposable diapers during a child’s early life, whereas an entire cloth diaper system will run you roughly $300 to $350 in total in addition to laundering costs.

EASE: Disposable

Adopting cloth diapers will add two to four loads of laundry to your weekly rotation — so if the thought of washing extra clothes isn’t thrilling, you may want to stick with disposable. With cloth diapers, you also can’t pitch the waste immediately after changing, which makes your standard throwaway diaper so great for times you’re on-the-go.

Which diapers are best for your familyPhoto credit: Shutterstock

IMPACT: Cloth

Concerned about environmental impact? More and more families are, and cloth is the way to go if you’re worried about your footprint. More than 20 billion diapers are tossed each year, leading to loads of unnecessary waste — unless you choose cloth. Believe it or not, each diaper would take more than 500 years to fully decompose in a landfill (whoa, baby!).

ABSORBENCY: Disposable

Disposable diapers are designed with absorbency in mind, so moms and dads don’t need to worry about leaks and constant changes. Even the best cloth diapers are typically less absorbent than standard disposable, and you’ll probably end up changing your baby every two or three hours for dry bottoms.

SKIN: Cloth

If your baby has sensitive skin, you may want to invest in a cloth diaper system. In some cases, babies with sensitive skin react better to cloth diapers than to disposables. In either case, it can’t hurt to add a diaper rash cream into the mix, like Boudreaux’s All Natural Butt Paste ($9) with soothing aloe.

No matter what type of diaper is right for your baby and lifestyle, click here to learn more about Boudreaux’s Butt Paste for your baby’ diaper rash needs. Crafted by a pharmacist with kids of his own, Boudreaux’s products help treat and prevent diaper rash without parabens, preservatives or artificial fragrances.
