Maybe you’re a coupon-cutting penny pincher or you’ve ever done a double take at the total of your Sephora cart. We all want to get the most beauty bang for our buck on the makeup and skincare products we buy. We want them to work miracles on our skin, of course, but we also don’t want to toss them before we’ve used them up. And we feel the same way whether we’re tossing a $2 lip gloss or a $200 face serum. Today we’re sharing four easy tips for getting the most out of your makeup and skincare.

4 Ways to Make Your Beauty Products Last

Tip #1: Store them right

Is your makeup drawer a jumble of bottles, compacts and palettes? If you find yourself constantly digging through mountains of makeup to find the product you need, your makeup won’t last as long as it should. Tossed-around compacts lead to broken blushes and eye shadows. Tilted, jumbled bottles create cracked lids and leaks. Two other big culprits — light and heat — make the bathroom one of the worst places to store your priciest skincare products. Separate your makeup based on those products you use most often and those you only pull out for special occasions. Consider keeping certain products like eye creams, perfume and skincare with vitamin C in the refrigerator. The cooler temperature helps boost its performance (cool eye cream does double duty to deflate puffy, tired eyes) and preserves its ingredients.

Make beauty products last

Tip #2: Use them right

How you use your beauty products can also cause them to go bad sooner than they should. Raise your hand if you’re a mascara wand pumper. (Guilty!) Pumping the wand in and out of the tube forces air inside and dries out the mascara. Instead, twist the wand inside the tube to load it up with mascara. Other usage mistakes? Dipping your finger directly into wide mouth cream and lotion jars and not shaking foundation before applying.

Making beauty products last

Tip #3: Get every last drop

Beauty product packaging often foils your best attempts to get the most out of a product. I get so irritated when the dropper of my favorite serum no longer reaches the very last drops at the bottom of the bottle. Or when I just know more foundation remains in that container but refuses to come out, despite all my shaking and squeezing.

Luckily, with a little gadget called the BEAUTISCOOP, you can ensure that your favorite products are good to the last drop. Use it for lotion and lip gloss, makeup and moisturizer, serum and shampoo. The dual-sided scoop has two sizes that fit into just about any container to capture every ounce of product hiding down at the bottom. The wand is easy to use, fits into every bottle, tube and container I’ve tried it in, and makes me feel good knowing that I’m no longer wasting product.

Tip #4: Buy a mini

How to make beauty products last

Anyone else have trouble controlling yourself as you wait in line at Sephora? Those sample-sized tempters often try to jump right into my basket! Thanks to the rise of travel-friendly mini products, you don’t have to just enjoy sample sizes as free gifts with your order. While there are dozens to swoon over, there’s actually one sample-size cosmetic you really should consider using consistently — mascara.

Most mascaras have a 3-month shelf life, but I’ve never finished a tube in 3 months, ever. That means I’m left with tossing a tube before it’s done (not usually) or going beyond the 3 month mark which raises my risk of eye infection. One 2008 study found that nearly 40% of the mascaras surveyed were contaminated with either a bacteria or fungus after three months of use. Ewwww.

Luckily, with mini-sized mascaras, you will likely use them up before they get gross, and they are less likely to dry out or get clumpy. Plus you have an legit excuse to try all the different travel-sized mascaras that places like Sephora and Ulta offer. #winwin

I’m in my mid-30s… my, erm, later-middle-30s, which means skincare needs to be serious. No more “Oh that smells nice!” or “Oh, I like that packaging!” or “It was on sale!” Late-mid-30s means I need ingredients I know will help me protect and preserve what I still have and help repair what has started to slip. We’re talking the big guns: retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid.

Advanced Clinicals: A secret skin-care weapon

While you know I love a good trip to Sephora, skincare doesn’t have to be outrageously expensive to be effective, which is one of the reasons I’ve been loving trying out some of the products from Advanced Clinicals. I hadn’t heard of the brand, but I learned a team of cosmetic chemists developed Advanced Clinicals to create affordable and effective formulations using the most advanced technology available. I found all of the things I’m looking for in this collection of skin and body care products: proven skincare ingredients + simple no-frills packaging + a wallet-friendly price.

Advanced Clinicals - affordable anti-aging skin care products

Incorporating Advanced Clinicals products into a skin care routine

I’ll admit it. I felt a little skeptical when I first heard about the brand. How could they have these big name skincare boosters like retinol and AHA and cost only $10-$25? Then I tried them out. I’ve integrated a few Advanced Clinicals products into my beauty routine for the last few weeks, and I’m impressed.

The benefits of Advanced Clinicals serums

Two of my favorite products turned out to be serums: the CoQ10 Wrinkle Defense Serum and the Collagen Instant Plumping Serum. I love how serum tends to absorb quickly and lets you layer on skin-boosting benefits. I’ve been mixing a dropper-full of the CoQ10 and Collagen together and patting them into my skin morning and night. The serums haven’t irritated my skin in any way and have made my skin feel more moisturized and firmer. (Check out all their serums here.)

Advanced Clinicals - affordable anti-aging skin care products

I’ve also been intrigued by their spa-size bottles of powerhouse-ingredients lotions like Hyaluronic Acid Skin Hydrator or Vitamin C Advanced Brighten Cream or Retinol Advanced Firming Cream. To be fair, these key ingredients are not at the top of the product’s ingredient list. But here’s why I still like them: they cost $15 for a whopping 16 ounces of product.

I’m not one to rub a $75 retinol cream onto my chest or the back of my hands. I’m just not going to use it in that way. But a $15 lotion that contains retinol, collagen or vitamin C? No problem! Even if it does have a lower percentage of the product, I’m now putting it on body parts that never dreamed of getting a luxury ingredient like that! (Sorry, back of hands.)

And wait, wait, wait… I just looked and these 16-oz spa sizes are also available at Walmart for — wait for it — $5.99! I’m not surprised to see that some of the varieties are sold out!

From masks and oils, to serums and creams, check all the entire line of Advanced Clinicals products at Now, please excuse me while I go slather my neck with vitamin C.

It’s the middle of winter, which means my legs are rocking a nice bright shade of blinding white. Anyone else? So I’ve been busy testing out self-tanners to share with you. It can be a daunting task! The fear of the orange is real, people.

I’ve had a favorite self-tanner I’ve used for the last few years and was definitely nervous to try out a new brand. But now I’m a convert and want to introduce you to my new favorite self-tanner and three of their formulas. Ladies, meet Bondi Sands.

Bondi Sands Self-Tanner

I first heard about this Australian self-tanner on Instagram. I clicked through someone’s tagged picture of their just-back-from-the-Bahamas tan and made it to the Bondi Sands Insta page — and holy moly — golden glow for daaaays. I couldn’t believe the before and afters! So I had to try it out for myself.

Bondi Sands Self Tanner

Three Reasons To Love Bondi Sands

I fell in love with Bondi Sands for three reasons:

  1. The color: The color is amazing! You won’t see a hint of orange, just a beautiful, believable golden glow.
  2. The smell: You know the “the smell” most self-tanners have? These Bondi Sands tanners don’t have it at all! Instead, they all smell like coconut.
  3. The formula options: Foams, lotions, dry oils. You can pick your color option (light/medium or dark) and your formula preference to find your perfect fit.
Find Your Perfect Self-Tanner Formula

I tried out three different formulas and three shades of Bondi Sands self-tanner: the self-tanning lotion in light/medium, the self-tanning foam in dark and the self-tanning dry oil.

Bondi Sands light/medium self-tanning lotion

I’m used to a tanning lotion and liked how the formula went on with gloves. Though I’m glad I started with the light/medium option, I found that it didn’t really provide enough color for me. It definitely took the blinding white edge off, but I was up for a bit more.

Bondi Sands dark self-tanning foam

Next, I tried the dark foam with a tanning mitt. The foam dries fast, which makes the application fast but also means you need to work quickly and work on one area of the body at a time. The color was…wow! Mid-summer, post-island-getaway golden! Check out the before and after!

Bondi Sands Self Tanner

The lighting makes it look a little more dramatic than it really was. Picture on the left was early morning while the one on the right was in the afternoon. Still, the end results was a gorgeous golden glow that looked believable. In other words, no one at my tennis lesson gave me a raised what-did-you-do eyebrow. I was really happy with the application except for my hand which ended up a bit splotchy. The second time I tried it, I moisturized the back of my hands right after applying the tanner and that helped a lot.

Bondi Sands self-tanning dry oil

Finally, I tried the dry oil — a self-tanner formula I’d never used before. The lotion and the foam direct you to wash the product off 1-6 hours after application (depending on how dark you want it), but you don’t need to rinse off the oil. Plus, since the tanner is combined with hydrating argan oil, it’s moisturizing your skin while it’s tanning it. Win-win! The color was a little darker than the light lotion, but not as dark as the dark foam. Once again, it smells divine.

Bondi Sands Self Tanner

Truth be told, I don’t know how necessary it is to wash off the lotion or foam at all. The lotion was so light, there was no need to halt the color development, and with the dark foam, I put it on late morning and washed it off during my shower the next morning. It can be hard enough to find time to self-tan in the first place, so I’m never too thrilled with tanners that require you to rinse off afterwards. Luckily, it didn’t see to matter much in this case.

Tan legs? The smell of coconut? Excuse me while I go make myself a mojito and pretend I’m on an exotic island…

If you’re looking for a new self-tanner to give your pale gams a little glow in any season, I give Bondi Sands two — golden — thumbs up! Find it at, Target or Amazon.

Do you have a favorite self-tanner?

So….I got Invisalign. You know… the clear braces. The ones you’ve been thinking about. Oh sure, you’ll make your tween or teen suffer through traditional metal braces. It’s something they just have to live through, right? But for you, as an adult, well, you know that there’s no way you can go a traditional braces route.

Whether you’ve never had to deal with teeth issues before or are wondering how you could have had braces as a kid and still have teeth shifting (me!), I’m here to share. I’m two months in and here to report the good, the bad and the ugly about getting Invisalign as an adult. Brace yourselves. (Get it?!)

Everything You Need to Know About Invisalign

I debated getting Invisalign for a looooong time. There were parts of my smile I just wasn’t happy about and I love to smile! Despite having had braces as a kid, my lower teeth were starting to crowd and turn and I had one upper tooth that was getting a mind of its own. It wasn’t awful, but it impacted how I felt about myself, how I smiled, how I felt about pictures of myself. But I just wasn’t sure it was “bad enough” to warrant a fix. Why is it that we moms often so easily do things for others and push our wants to the back burner? Eventually, I decided to take the fist step and get a consultation with Dr. Thomas Lee at

Eventually, I decided to take the fist step and get a consultation with Dr. Thomas Lee at Premier Orthodontics. Ironically, during that consultation, I found out there was a lot more going with my teeth than just those two issues! I also had problems with grinding and teeth starting to collapse inward, something that happens as we age. Getting straight teeth is often seen as just a cosmetic issue, but crooked teeth can also impact how you chew, jaw pain and tooth wear.

So I took the plunge and got Invisalign. Two months in, I’m here to report on what I wish I knew beforehand, what I’ve learned, and how to have the best (and fastest!) experience with your aligners.

It will take about two weeks to get used to them

The first two weeks the aligners just felt… weird. They felt big in my mouth (even though they are super thin). My lips would catch on them. I felt nervous about being able to get them out. I felt lispy and like everyone could see them. After two weeks, I barely even noticed them.

Invisalign is clear but not invisible

Some friends said they couldn’t see them, but I was acutely aware of them when I smiled and talked. Yes, they were clear on my teeth, but you could still see them. Especially with my “attachments…”

About those “attachments”

I thought Invisalign was just these clear trays I’d wear on my teeth. I did not know about attachments. According to my ortho, Dr. Lee, Invisalign has dramatically progressed since it was first released, meaning they can solve all kind of tooth issues they previously weren’t a good fit for. But, one of the ways they do this is with attachments — small little tooth-colored “dots” they adhere to your teeth with glue to help the aligners grip and turn a tooth and sometimes with rubber bands between your upper and lower teeth. Lucky me, I got to have both — 12 attachments in all and one rubber band. This makes the aligners more visible on my teeth and means that when I take my aligners out, I still have a bunch of these “dots” on my teeth. Not a deal-breaker, but definitely something I wish I’d known about ahead of time.

What You Need to Know about Invisalign

You can’t eat with Invisalign in

Was I the only one who didn’t know this? You need to take out your aligners any time you eat or drink anything other than water. This means a) you’ll need to get good at taking your aligners in and out, or b) you’ll find yourself eating less. Though I’m a 10 a.m. snacker, I found myself skipping it so I didn’t have to take the aligners out, eat, brush and put them back in. Calories saved, yes. But I would also be starving by lunch.

Must-haves for your Invisalign “toolkit”

You’ll need to build a “toolkit” to keep any place you’ll be taking your aligners in and out — one at home, one at work, one in your purse. You’ll definitely need a toothbrush (consider a small travel one!) and possibly a mini toothpaste. You’ll need to brush (or at least rinse really well) any time after you eat or drink. I also had trouble getting my aligners in and out with just my fingers but someone at Premier Ortho office told me to get a golf tee — genius! It saves your nails, isn’t too sharp so it won’t hurt your gums or damage the aligners and makes it a breeze to quickly pop the aligners out. Plus it fits it the Invisalign case!

What to Keep in your Invisalign "Toolkit"

You can make out with them in

I know you were curious. (Wink!)

How long you will have them will vary greatly

It will depend on your age — kid teeth move faster, but for adults, my ortho said he tells most people 18-24 months. It will depend on if you actually wear your aligners for the majority of the day (Invisalign says you should shoot for 22 hrs out of every day. Wear them less and you’ll get weeks added on. Be diligent and you may get done early!). And it will, of course, depend on how much work it will take to get your teeth from A to B. But, you can cut your treatment time in half if you do one thing…

How to Cut Your Time with Invisalign in HALF

Use the Acceledent

What is this sexy device I’m rocking? It’s the AcceleDent and if you use it with your Invisalign it cuts your treatment time by 50 percent! So what is it? A vibrating device that you put in your mouth every day for 20 minutes. Stay with me. Admittedly, it takes some getting used to. The vibration is very mild, but you do have to have this thing in your mouth for 20 minutes every day and it does look… um, a bit awkward, as you can see. The vibration helps to ease any pain you have from your aligners as well as increase the blood flow to the gums which allows your teeth to move quicker. While you normally wear your Invisalign trays for 2 weeks per tray, if you use the AcceleDent device, you change trays every week. So in my case, my 28 trays are taking me 28 weeks, instead of 52 weeks. Plus, since you only have each tray in for a week, you don’t have to deal with issues like staining or smells. So even though it’s a no-no, I drink my morning coffee with my aligners in and don’t have to worry about them staining. (I do rinse and brush afterward.)

Granted the AcceleDent is an additional cost on top of Invisalign, but if you have an upcoming event (wedding/graduation/reunion/etc.) that you want to get the treatment finished in time for or just want the whole process over ASAP, the AcceleDent is an incredible option.

Do not make plans to see a friend for lunch immediately after your Invisalign appointment

Because you’ll still be in shock from your Invisalign and your attachments and not knowing how to get the aligners out and you’ll only have water. Or so I’ve heard…

Tip for Invisalign Newbies

Beauty Tool SplurgesAh, a new year, a fresh start. This is the perfect time to give your skincare an upgrade. If the holidays left you with some spending money (or swoon, a Sephora gift card!), consider skipping that lip gloss palette or nail polish sampler that’s on sale and treat yourself to one of these three beauty splurges that you will appreciate all year long. You and your skin deserve it.

One for your skin, one for your hair and one for your body, these are some of my favorite tried-and-true beauty tool splurges for 2017.

Trophy Skin microdermmd

Trophy Skin MicrodermMD At-Home Microdermabrasion Machine

I know it’s a mouthful, but believe me when I say that device this will forever change you skin. You know about microdermabrasion, right? It’s a procedure you can get done at your dermatologist or a medi-spa. It buffs off the outer layer of dead skin to reveal fresher, younger skin, while at the same time stimulating the body to increase cell turnover to produce more collagen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, micorderm can help deal with dull complexion, uneven skin tone or texture, age spots, acne spots and melasma.

This professional-grade microderm system comes with a diamond tip with eight levels of suction. It has both a manual and pre-programed auto-mode that adjusts the suction level as it directs you to different parts of the face. I know, I know — $300 for a machine that sloughs off your dead skin? But consider this: Most derms recommend you get a series of 4-6 microderm sessions, with an average cost of $150 per session. Or, you could own a Trophy Skin microderm machine for $300 with a near endless number of treatments and all these added accessories:

  • Pore Extraction Tip
  • Pore Infusion Tip
  • 100 Filters
  • Cleaning Brush
  • Carrying Case
  • 5x Magnifying
  • Interactive LCD Screen
  • Auto-Mode with Timer

From face to neck to chest to back to hands, I’ve had mine for over two years and continue to be impressed with it. I still haven’t run out of filters (which, by the way, you change after each use because they get nasty with the dead skin cells you just buffed off) and am just starting to think about replacing my diamond tip. All in all, a skincare investments worth making. (Trophy Skin MicrodermMD At-Home Microdermabrasion Machine, $299)

T3 Whirl Trio Curling Rod with Interchangeable Barrels

Raise your hand if you have endless bathroom space. No, you neither? Then you will L-O-V-E this curling rod from T3. One handle + three interchangeable barrels = all the hairstyles you can handle (and still store in your drawer). The Whirl Trio includes a 1-inch straight barrel, a 1.5-inch straight barrel and a 1.25-0.75-inch tapered barrel. Mix-and-match barrel sizes for a single ‘do or choose your fav barrel-of-the-day to create a unique style on its own. The curling iron also boasts the T3 Tourmaline and ceramic barrels that seal the cuticle for a smooth, shiny finish and their digital T3 SinglePass™ technology that measures and adjusts the temperature for consistent, healthy results and one-pass styling.

Believe me, I am no hair styling genius, but even I have been able to create some bouncy volume, beachy waves, and tight wringlets depending on the barrel and curling technique. And luckily, T3 includes a number of tutorials with the Whirl Trio to help you practice creating different looks. Don’t just take my word for it either — the Whirl Trio has been a winner of both the 2016 and 2015 Allure Best of Beauty Award. (T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand, $270)

Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X

Let’s all agree, it would be no sad loss to spend less time shaving. From legs and knees to pits and other body parts (ahem), we ladies can spend a great deal of time on hair removal each week. Granted winter’s long sleeves and tights and infrequent swimsuit appearances might allow you ignore your razor for a day or two, but underneath those layers, you know the fuzz is still there. This is what makes winter the perfect time to invest in a Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X device.

The Tria Hair Removal Laser relies on diode lasers (the same technology used by many dermatologists for hair removal) to “disable the hair follicle by targeting the melanin at the root without damaging the surrounding skin.” In other words, it zaps that sucker so it won’t grow back. Charge up the handheld device, choose from five different strengths depending on your pain threshold and start zapping.

I’ll answer the two questions I’m guessing you’re having now: 1) Yes, it does indeed work. For complete hair removal, you do need to complete multiple treatments over the course of the hair’s growth cycle to prohibit it from coming, back but it does indeed work. Like no shaving my pits. Ever. 2) Yes, it does hurt a bit… like a rubber band sting, but with five levels to choose from, you can find one that is manageable and work your way up.

An investment device to be sure, but if you remember that the cost of professional laser hair for just one body part can range from $400-900, and the the Tria 4X is FDA-cleared for all over the body and face, well, this is one little device that could help you kiss your razor goodbye forever. Now to decide what to do with all that extra non-shaving time… (Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X, $484)

How to Use a Subscription Box Swap

Do you subscribe to a subscription box? From skincare to snacks, makeup to meals, candles to cocktails to even… ahem, bedroom toys, monthly subscription boxes have continued to explode in popularity. According to one study there are nearly 10,000 different subscription boxes available. Crazy! And really, what’s not to love? It saves you shopping time by arriving right on your doorstep, helps you keep it fresh by trying new things, and lifts your spirit by balancing out the bills in the mail with some fun new products to try.

But what happens when a bunch of the items in your subscription box are a bust? While some jewelry and clothing subscription boxes allow you to return undesired items, many other subscription services can leave you stuck with products that don’t work for you.

Not surprisingly, there’s an app for that. SWAP by reKindness is an app that lets subscription box shoppers swap their “meh” pile for a “marvelous” pile. All you have to do is snap a pic, upload “swap” items available, request a swap and seal the deal from your phone.

How to use a subscription box swap app

How a subscription box swap works
  1. Upload an image of an unused item(s) from Glossybox, Stitch Fix, Owlcrate, etc. (or a high-quality fashion item) and a brief description to add an item.
  2. Browse your news feed or search for items you want in exchange. You can search by location to avoid shipping costs or search by similar priced items.
  3. Make swap offers by tapping on items you like and offering items of your own in return.
  4. Members have 48 hours to accept or counter the swap offers they receive.
  5. To finalize your swaps, either schedule a time and place to meet or share shipment tracking information in the app.

swap app2

One thing that sets the SWAP app apart? It’s fast. Offers only last 48 hours so you’ll know within days, instead of weeks (I’m looking at you Craigslist), if your item has an offer or counteroffer.

Did you know that 85-percent of clothes and textiles end up in landfills, even though 95-percent can be reused or recycled? And that over 25-percent of what subscription box customers receive is unloved? That makes the SWAP app good for the earth, good for your closet and good for your wallet. A triple win!

Visit the SWAP website to learn more or download the app on iTunes.

Save or Splurge on the Best Exfoliators

You are a grown woman, which means an exfoliator needs to be part of your beauty regime. Your face cannot afford to be without one! Your skin cells are always regenerating, about every 28-31 days if you’re younger and a little bit longer if you’re, ahem, a bit more mature. Without help to slough off and remove these dead skin cells, they can lead to clogged pores and dull skin — and prevent your skincare products from being effective.

Whether you are dealing with adult acne or fine lines, sunspots or dull skin, all of the skincare products you use — serums, lotions, foundations and more — will work better when you have exfoliated skin. Here are three options I’m loving at every price range.Best Exfoliator to Splurge on: Lancer Polish

Splurge: The luxury face exfoliator

I recently tried The Lancer Method three-part system, which includes an exfoliator, gentle cleanser and moisturizer. My favorite is the exfoliator, by far. The system has you exfoliate before you cleanse, an interesting switch of steps but one that is designed to better prepare your skin for cleansing.

The exfoliating Polish is pretty gritty, which I love. It combines a self-warming element to make the exfoliation more effective, along with pure minerals and pumpkin and pomegranate enzymes to remove surface debris and dull, dry skin cells. Plus, it has lavender in it, which makes it divine to use before bed. It is not cheap, but with fans like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian looking to get that “Lancer glow,” it might be a worthwhile skin treat. (Psst! If you’re on the fence, buy it through Sephora so you can return it if it’s not a great fit for your skin.)

Boot Botanics

Save: The drugstore face exfoliator

Despite my love of Lancer, you don’t have to spend a bundle to to keep your skin exfoliated. Head to your nearest Target beauty section or Ulta store to pick up one of my drugstore faves: the Boots Botanics Microdermabrasion Polish Age Defense. For $13, you get a powerful polish made of superfine pumice particles that can be used once a week to buff off those dead skin cells. The polish also combines the antioxidant power of ginkgo extract and the soothing moisture of shea butter to leave your skin looking fresh and smooth. This scrub is also pretty gritty, so if you have sensitive skin, you might want to pass.

Baking soda exfoliator

DIY: Make your own face exfoliator

Want an even simpler and more affordable exfoliator that will still slough off that dead surface skin? Head to the kitchen and grab your baking soda. Mix a teaspoon or so with some water or your favorite creamy cleanser to make a paste and massage onto your skin. The baking soda is super fine so it won’t irritate your skin, and since you can mix it with water or a cleanser, and adjust the amount you add, it’s easy to customize the formula to fit your skin.

No more excuses! Pick your perfect exfoliator and get to sloughing!

4 Self-Care Apps Moms Will Love

Back-to-school craziness have anyone feeling a little… crazy? We’re sharing a few of our favorite apps to help you find and make use of those few moments of “me time” in the midst of your money-making-carpool-driving-dinner-making-homework-helping-permission-slip-signing busyness. Even if it’s just a few minutes, you’ll be glad you took a moment for yourself.

If you have one minute to spare: Make self-care a habit

Apps to Use When You Have One Spare Minute

When’s the last time you did something for you? Whether it’s meditating or working out, calling a good friend or taking that probiotic everyday, building these good, self-care habits can be hard when your day is filled with “Mom mom mom mom mom mom”s. With a habit-building app like Balanced or Productive, you can set self-care goals big (get a massage once a month) or small (drink three glasses of water today), and the app will remind you of your goals, celebrate your progress and keep yourself accountable for taking time for you.

If you have five minutes to spare: Zen out

Apps to try if you have 5 minutes to spare

Mediation doesn’t have to be twenty minutes of ommm-ing or nothing at all. The benefits of taking just five minutes to breathe deeply and focus inward can decrease your stress, lower your blood pressure and help you make it through the afternoon. Finding a meditation app you connect with can take a try or two since you’ll want to find one with a voice that won’t make you want to scream (not very zen). Personally, I’ve enjoyed Stop, Breathe, Think (free), Buddify ($5) and the new OMG I Can Meditate (free). You can also just set your phone timer for five minutes, close your eyes and focus on taking longer and deeper breaths — until the kids pile into the car asking for a snack.

If you have 15 minutes to spare: Work out

Workout Apps for Moms

Don’t have 30 or 60 minutes to exercise? No worries. High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT) has been shown to be a quick and effective way to fit in your exercise in small doses with benefits that continue throughout the day. Try Keelo, which tailors its HIIT workout suggestions based on your age, gender, fitness level and available equipment. The workouts average 15 minutes with options as quick as eight minutes. If you have 26 minutes to spare: Nap

How to nap in just 26 minutes

Raise your hand if you’re tired. While you may not be able to score a few extra hours at night, you might be able to feel a whole lot more rested with just 26 minutes. I know, I know. It sounds a bit crazy. A 26-minute nap? I wouldn’t believe if I hadn’t seen it with my own two eyes. But I have a dear friend who takes a 26-minute nap most days. She falls asleep in just minutes and wakes up seconds before the 26-minute alarm goes off. It’s crazy, but it’s also crazy effective. Using Nap26, you’ll “learn” to get to sleep fast, get restful sleep and wake up refreshed, un-groggy and ready to rock the rest of your day — all in just 26 minutes.

What are you favorite apps that help you find “me time?”

5 Reasons to Vacation with a HomeAway House Rental

My family loves to travel. This summer we spent the entire month of July on the road exploring everywhere from the peaks of Switzerland to France’s most famous city, from the mountains of Steamboat, Colorado to a few nights river rafting the Green River in Utah. While our trips often combine a variety of hotels and camping, on this trip, we tried a new way a stay: renting three different homes around the world from HomeAway. Today I’m highlighting one of our favorite HomeAway stays in Paris’ Latin Quarter and five reasons you should consider renting a home on your family’s next vacation. (Seriously, folks. These were the views out of our two apartment windows. #heaven)

Why You Should Use a Paris House Rentals

Reason #1: Enough room for all

Raise your hand if you love cramming in a hotel room with your kids? Me neither. Traveling as a family of five can make it tricky staying in a hotel… especially as my boys get bigger. Many of the hotels in Europe wouldn’t allow five people to stay in one hotel room and those that do in the states, often end up with us feeling cramped with a combination of too much luggage piled around folded out hide-a-beds or rolled-in roll-aways. At our flat in Paris, there was a large bedroom that gave my husband and I plenty of room and a separate living area with a convertible couch for my boys. We not only had the space we needed, but we didn’t need to tiptoe around in the dark when our boys went to bed. Plus, there was a spacious bathroom, a full kitchen, and a dining table that could seat all of us for meals.

Reason #2: Save money by eating in

I love eating my way through a new country, but with three growing boys in toys (who are always hungry), this can be an expensive activity. By renting a home instead of staying in a hotel, my family was able save a ton of money by having many of our meals in. We picked up cereals and fruit and the nearby market to make breakfasts quick and cheap, pre-made sandwiches to take with us when we went out to explore and even made dinner at “home” a few nights. Besides the money we saved, I loved being able to explore the shops and farmer’s markets of a new country. A Paris sunset, an open bottle of wine, my kids occupied with UNO? I was in heaven.

Reason #3: Experience the city as a local

Don’t want to feel like a tourist? Many hotels are located in busy areas that are filled with souvenir shops and American-ized menus. In contrast? Our HomeAway rental was located on the 6th floor of an apartment building in the Latin Quarter. The street was filled with local markets and little cafes with waiters who didn’t speak much English. Instead of a hotel shuttle, we took buses and the metro to get around and spent the afternoon walking through the nearby Jardin des Plantes where locals sat, read and let their kids play.

Reason #4: Insider tips from your host

HomeAway rentals are owned by real people who get in touch via email or in person to give you the inside scoop on the area. Our Paris apartment host not only helped provide directions to get us from the local train station to the apartment, but met us on arrival to give us tips on the best place to get a fresh croissant for breakfast (just three doors down), how to walk to the Seine River (just a block away) and the DIY rentable bike station (the first 30 minutes are free and there are drop-off stations all over town!) hidden around the corner from the local market, something we never would have found on our own.

Reason #5: The amenities you really appreciate

Sure mini soaps and robes are nice at a hotel (really, I do love me some robes). But you know what kind of amenities I really appreciate when we travel as a family? Free laundry. Because, well, kids. And kid games in the drawers. And a wine opener and real glasses. True there is no one hanging up your towels and remaking your bed each day at a HomeAway, but renting a home or apartment when you travel gives you access to all sorts of other amenities that are a whole lot more useful than someone making your bed.

For your next family vacation, check out HomeAway or their collection of other home rental partners ( and to find an apartment, condo, cabin, house or even a boat (Yes, boat! We looked at a few options when we stayed in Amsterdam!) for your next getaway.

We were reimbursed for our stay in Paris. Opinions expressed are our own.

Oh, summer — full of too much sun, too many late nights, and too many margaritas. While we’re already missing our summer fun, we’re certainly not loving the sun spots and dull, dehydrated skin it left behind. Get your skin back in shape with these pads, peels and masks designed to deal with your post-summer skin woes.

Dealing with Post-Summer Skin

Whether you’re dealing with discoloration or dehydration, rough patches or dullness, these at-home peels and masks can help to rejuvenate your skin to reveal brighter, clearer, smoother skin. Let’s be honest: These products aren’t magic and don’t work overnight. But integrate them into your skincare routine now and you’ll see start to see major skin improvements within a month.

Skincare Peels and Pads

At-home skin peel pads

I haven’t ventured into the world of professional peels (yet). You know the ones where you have to hide your face for a week afterwards and that make layers of skin peel off your face to reveal baby-butt smooth skin underneath? While I get up the nerve to try one of those, I’ve been happy to start small with these gentler daily peels that slowly, but steadily, help to reveal brighter, clearer skin. If you’re new to peels, start with the new L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Peel Pads. Under $20 and easy to find at Target, Walgreens or Ulta, these pre-soaked pads rely on 10% glycolic complex to encourage cell turnover and a micro-texturized surface to gently exfoliate your skin while you swipe. No rinsing. No measuring. No waiting. Just swipe these one-step pads before bed and see clearer, smoother skin in a month.

Another favorite drugstore find is the Olay ProX Nightly Purifying Micro Peel. I had seen my favorite beauty magazines and websites rave about this OTC peel and it’s lived up to the hype. Free of fragrance, oil and dye, this peel uses a trio acids — glycolic, citric and lactic — and vitamin B to improve your skin in just five days. The formula is lightweight, feels great on the skin, and as an added bonus, it comes packaged in a smart bottle — when you unscrew the top, the ingenious built-in dropper automatically fills with the perfect amount of product you need. You have no excuse not to put it on before bed… even when you’re exhausted from adulting.

I also tried out a sample of the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peel Pads. One of the things I like about these pads is that they are available in five strengths: Alpha Beta® Ultra Gentle, Universal (same Original Formula), Extra Strength, Medi-Spa, and Ferulic and Retinol Wrinkle Recovery (click here to see the difference and find the best one for your skin type). The pads come packaged with two separate pads. The Step 1 Pad is soaked with the exfoliating acids — wipe it over your face until the pad feels dry. Then open the second pad and apply. This Step 2 Pad controls the acid activity and delivers anti-aging additives. My skin is pretty resilient, so while the Ultra Gentle pads were a bit too mellow for me, I’m looking forward to upgrading to the Medi-Spa, and Ferulic and Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Pads next time.

Origin Plantscription Youth Sheet Mask

Post-summer skin masks

I love a good facial mask. There’s something about putting on a mask that says, “I’m taking time for me.” I’ve slathered on a number of different masks this month, but here are three that really stuck out. The First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Intensive Peel truly lives up to its name. It looks and feels like a mask but does alllll the work of a peel. The directions say to “Leave on for one to five minutes as tolerated” and let me tell you – you will feel this one working. The multi-acid peel uses a combination of three powerful exfoliators — lactic acid, salicylic acid and mucor miehei extract — to reveal brighter, smoother skin. Be sure to do a patch test if you have extra sensitive skin and follow this mask up with a soothing and hydrating oil or night cream.

Another favorite was the Bliss Mask a-‘Peel’ Radiance Revealing Rubberizing Mask — try to say that three times fast! Available in a three-pack, you mix the powder with three tablespoons of water to create a glue-like paste. Apply it quickly to your face in a thick, but even layer, and then wait 20 minutes. Vitamin C and antioxidants fight free-radicals to leave skin brighter, while seaweed and Bilberry extract detoxify and calm the skin. When time is up, you get to relive that kindergarten sensation of peeling Elmer’s glue off your hands! The mask comes off in long, thick strips that I’d put in the trash instead of down the drain. Rinse off any remaining mask and revel in your newfound radiance.

Finally, my intro to sheet masks was the Origins Plantscription Youth-Renewing Sheet Mask. While this mask definitely won the award for “Most Likely to Scare the Children” there’s something about a mask that requires that you lay down and relax that provide benefits beyond the skin. Designed to deal with dryness, dullness and fine lines, this oil-infused mask combines raspberry oil, rosehip oil and tamanu oil, along with the Plantscription Collection’s key ingredient, anogeissus, to give you youthful, moisturized skin — and 10 minutes of downtime.
